Customer Service Information:
Heat Pump Systems…
Gas heating systems produce the same heating BTU at -50 degree F as they do at +50 degree F but Heat Pump systems BTU output drops as the temperatures outside drop. Balance Point of the home is where the heat pump BTU output equals the BTU loss of the home. At this point the system will run nonstop but maintain the set point temperature of the thermostat. Temperatures below this the unit will start to fall behind. The auxiliary heat strips do not come on until the room temperature is 1-2 degrees F below the set point, so you end up running the outdoor heat pump and cycling the auxiliary heat strips on and off nonstop but still never satisfy the thermostat. When this occurs, you need to turn the heat pump to Emergency Heat which shuts the outdoor heat pump off and uses only the auxiliary heat strips which should bring room temp up to set point and satisfy the thermostat. The colder it gets the shorter the off cycle becomes.
Clean air filters in all systems = operating more efficiently
Gas Heating Systems some of the above information applies. Running times will always be longer the colder it gets outside. If the indoor temperature doesn’t satisfy the furnace, it may be time for service!
• Call Emergency numbers if you smell gas
• Keep front of furnaces and combustion intake and exhaust pipes clear of obstructions
• Keep clean filters installed
We highly recommend CO (Carbon Monoxide) detectors in all homes that utilize gas or wood burning for any part of the home’s heating source. CO is noted as the “Silent killer” due to most of the casualties to this go to bed and never wake up
• CO detectors should be placed in occupied bedrooms and near the heating system and return air
Other things to do to prepare for the cold…
• Check all your windows to make sure they are completely closed… (top and bottom)
• Keep garage doors and all exterior doors to the home closed unless open is a necessity
• Drip both HOT AND COLD water to help prevent water pipes from freezing. Add an electric space heater where water piping is unconditioned spaces
• Keep a bathtub with some water in it in case of an outage so you can use it to fill the toilet tanks up and still flush the toilets in emergency situations
We hope this helps as you prepare your home for the colder temperatures!
If you have emergency needs, please call 417-417-7272
