The tussock moth caterpillars are feasting on the milkweed. I haven’t seen any monarch larvae yet but the plants have been visited numerous times by some adult monarchs. Hopefully we will get a batch soon.

The garden is beginning to produce beautifully. I have Padrones, both ripe red for drying and green for frying, long beans, and the Lima beans have stopped dropping their pods due to the heat and are ripening at last. I’m getting about two pounds of long beans a day and it’s been great to blanch them and freeze them for winter.

An assassin bug patrolling the pepper plants, looking for prey and helping to control the grasshoppers that are beginning to mature. Although this insect can inflict a painful bite to humans, the benefits of having them around outweighs the negative effects of using pesticides in the garden, and if you treat them with proper respect, you can avoid getting bitten.
