McCullough's Landscape & Nursery

McCullough's Landscape & Nursery Landscape Design | Build | Maintain firm located in Central Ohio. We love the Midwest; it’s where we’ve put down roots.

Owned and operated by two generations of McCullough’s, we formally founded our business in 1997. We live where we work, and we’re proud to have Horticulture and Design degrees from local schools like The Ohio State University and Columbus State. Our family has been working in Midwest agriculture for decades, which means we’re grounded in a firm understanding of horticulture and Central’s Ohio’s landscape. We know the climate, the plants, the soil and the seasons completely.

Not quite the “Full McCullough”— but when the maintenance team rolls in like this, we are hard to miss.
Spring work is in full swing, and our clients’ gardens are waking up with defined edges, fresh mulch, first mows and spring containers.

In a season where the weather can’t quite make up its mind, annuals remind us what’s coming. Spring containers are a bust of color within the gradually awakening garden. We are just starting this year’s spring arrangements and are fully embracing the season as it unfolds.

We made it.
At 10:46 am this morning we officially left behind stick season and entered SPRING.

The bulb layer may be brief, but it’s one of the most rewarding moments in the garden. Each day brings a visible change—longer light, warmer air, and color returning where it’s been shades of brown.

After a long winter (and a bit of storm cleanup), it feels especially good to be here.

How we spent the winter.

The pace may slow in winter, but the work never does. Debris from the 2025 season is processed into compost, then turned and monitored as it breaks down. Tree pruning is completed during dormancy, and our plant healthcare team continues to monitor and protect against winter stress and hungry deer.

Behind the scenes, our install team fabricates new containers for upcoming projects, and clients’ teak furniture is restored and refinished. The greenhouse stays active, with a steady rhythm of plugs and cuttings arriving and being potted up in preparation for spring and summer.

We also make time for training, with the best sessions ending in a few well-earned hats for the crew. By now, we’re all ready to be back in the garden, but proud of everything accomplished during the “off season.”

It’s happening, the greenhouses are busting at the seams ready for our clients gardens!

Nothing makes us happier than when clients share photos of their gardens after a project is complete. Seeing those spaces lived in and loved is why we do what we do. 🌿

Great gardens don’t just happen overnight. They’re the result of thoughtful planning, years of experience, and an eye toward how the space will grow and evolve. From the first sketch to the last plant in the ground, every detail matters—and it’s always rewarding to see how those details come together over time.

Thank you to all our wonderful clients who share snapshots of their gardens with us. Each one is a reminder that good design and careful planning really do make all the difference. 💚

We love designing gardens and containers that celebrate texture above all else—it’s at the heart of what we do. Our signature style, coined by our principal and lead designer Nick McCullough, is called Midwest Modern: a refined approach rooted in the region’s character with a bold focus on contrasting textures and monochromatic plantings.

Thanks to our private greenhouse and the incredible talent of our grower, Brent, we’re able to curate custom plant palettes that elevate this vision—layered, sculptural, and full of quiet drama.

It’s all about letting plants speak through form, foliage, and subtle variation. 🌿

Behind the hedges. Many of the gardens we craft and maintain are hidden behind hedges. Providing more than just privacy, hedges help define outdoor rooms, make destinations in the garden and are wonderful habitats for birds. We are at the tail end of shearing season, which means we are making pruning decisions for the growing habitat we desire. We trim for density, height, and shape. If you have dead evergreens this season, likely it is from last year during the drought. Either too little or too much water. Also, evergreens have constantly heightening disease pressure, so healthy hedges require strong coordination between maintenance and plant healthcare teams to prevent, monitor and treat.

This year, the City of New Albany requested plantings inspired by natural meadows. Our container plantings feature a harmonious mix of salvia, coneflowers, chamomile, and xeranthemum, all nestled into soft, flowing grasses. Scattered throughout the city, these living installations not only support bees and other pollinators but also create beautiful, ever-changing scenes for the community to enjoy. The success of this design is a true testament to the horticultural expertise and creative artistry of our team.

The creative exercise of playing with options, building in chaos to reach the finished arrangement. Summer annuals are almost all in the ground, but cooler May days have the hot weather patiently waiting to take off. We still have the whole summer head, just thankful for a break in the rain for things to dry out.

The Greenhouse is bursting and ready for annual displays and perennial installations. Every year we forget to document this moment because we are so excited to start planting.
