The First Neuse River Bridge

We’re out on Johnson Street with this old postcard - let’s learn more “from the attic!”

The first bridge to span the Neuse River in New Bern was completed in 1898 and ran from the foot of Johnson Street over to Bridge Street in Bridgeton. It was built of wood and had an iron swing span. In 1913 and again in 1933, the bridge was washed away by hurricanes. It was rebuilt and remained in operation until 1951, when New Bern’s second bridge at the foot of Broad Street was completed.
