Hollis Primary School: We insulated and clad over the old un-insulated brick walls, changed all windows to triple glazed, put in air-source heat pumps and heat recovery ventilators and added 100kw solar panels. Now we track energy use.

There's no place like home. It's in the 20s today and the house will stay in the 70s until evening with solar gain.

Note the canvas canopies (bottom photo) designed to shield the glass from summer sun. White clover was planted over and around the house, as it never needs mowing.

The Plowshare Farm community building or "Agora" was completed almost 10 years ago. I recently went back and followed up with the owner to see that most finishes are holding up very well, and the building is functioning for many activities as intended including community room, kitchen, bakery, library, craft room, classroom and offices. Most interesting to me was the fact that they have installed solar panels and made not just this building but the entire campus NET ZERO energy use !! Congratulations to these folks for their dedicated efforts to sustainability and energy efficiency.

This simple cape style home in New Hampshire received a deep energy retrofit and face-lift. The insulation was boosted to R-35 walls and R-50 roof. By insulating the roof the attic was kept inside the thermal envelope for pipes and ducts. The entire building was air sealed, and a ground-source heat pump installed. Triple-glazed windows were tuned so those facing south have high solar heat gain coatings enabling a passive solar assist. Predicted energy use will be substantially less than half that of a typical code compliant home.

Here's a small renovation which was just completed - before and after photos. The old roofs trapped snow and caused ice dams, required shoveling, and promoted rotted materials. The old kitchen was small and outdated. The renovation gave more area and height to the kitchen below and increased functionality of the studio loft. We super-insulated and air sealed all new construction. Although modest in scope it greatly increased functionality, comfort and resilience.

This 3,000 sq ft home has advanced insulation and a ground source heat pump. When it was first completed Public Service of NH tracked energy usage and reported that it cost less than $1,000 per year for heat, air conditioning and hot water for a family of 5 in climate zone 5. No, it's not on the coast, but we designed it to take full advantage of the expansive southern views. The large south-facing windows capture winter solar gain, but overhangs protect it from excess summer sun. Photo credit John Hession.
