Home Tip - Check your sump pump. As the winter snow melts and the rainy weather approaches, the soil around your foundation may become saturated. Your sump pump helps to manage excess ground water and keep your basement dry. Using a large bucket, fill your sump pit and watch how it works. If the float on the pump able to move freely? Is the water being pumped out at a satisfactory rate? Does the motor sound as if it is struggling? If you think you may have a potential issue, now would be the time to address it. This may also be a good time to consider a back up battery or alarm. A well operating sump pump is never really appreciated until you discover a lake in your basement!
