Memorial Day falls on the last Monday of May each year and is often recognized as the unofficial start of summer — filled with barbecues, gatherings, and vacations. But beyond the celebrations, Memorial Day carries a much deeper meaning.

Today, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. These fallen heroes made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms, preserve our way of life, and defend the values our nation was built upon.

Memorial Day is not about politics — it’s about remembrance, gratitude, and respect for those who never made it home.

It’s also important to remember that Memorial Day differs from Armed Forces Day and Veterans Day. Armed Forces Day honors those currently serving in the military, while Veterans Day recognizes all who have served. Memorial Day is dedicated specifically to those who gave their lives in service to the United States.

Most of Delaware is currently experiencing severe drought conditions. In April, we received just 1.74 inches of rain — about half of the normal 3.5-inch average.

Established in 1949 by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson, Armed Forces Day was created to unite the military services under one day of recognition following the formation of the Department of Defense. Celebrated each year on the third Saturday in May, the day honors the men and women currently serving in all six branches of the U.S. military: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard.

Distinct from Veterans Day and Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day specifically recognizes active-duty service members — while also honoring the dedication of reservists, veterans, and military families. Today, more than 1.34 million active-duty personnel continue to protect and serve our nation during times of conflict and peace alike.

🌲 Happy National Arbor Day! 🌳

J. Sterling Morton established the first Arbor Day in Nebraska on April 10, 1872, to urge Americans to practice conservation by planting trees.

On March 31, 1822, President Warren G. Harding issued a proclamation urging all governors to set aside the last Friday in April as the Golden Anniversary of Arbor Day.

In 1961, under then Governor Elbert N. Carvel and the General Assembly, the last Friday in April was formally declared as Arbor Day in Delaware.

This holiday encourages planting and caring for trees to protect natural resources, with over 10 million trees often planted nationwide for conservation.

Trees do so much for us. They cool our sidewalks, help us breathe easier, and they put us into context, holding our memories for generations.
