Talk about a headache. Backstory: I received a phone call about some water damage to a ceiling that needed to be repaired as part of an insurance claim. Nothing out of the ordinary. However, this family had a roof replaced over a decade ago. As it turns out, the company which did that replacement certainly didn't do it properly. The extent of rot, mold, and general damage to this ceiling was unbelievable, as you can clearly see from the photos (14' up on a vaulted ceiling, no less). I was surprised there wasn't a catastrophic failure in the framing which could've caused some serious injury to the clients. To put things into perspective, one of the rafters was cracked clean in half, supported only by the roof sheathing which IT was supposed to be supporting. Not to mention all of the material which had rotted away in previous years. Not a single component of this roof framing was standard - rafters were tapered from an odd 2x10 dimension down to a 2x6 over a 16' span. But, we were able to get things reframed to accept fresh insulation and drywall. All things considered, the clients were thrilled to have a safe end result which will last far longer than the previous one would've.
