Stained Sink? Could Be Hard Water

Stained sink?

A stained sink could mean that you have hard water in your home or business. But what exactly is hard water? Hard water got it’s name from the fact that it is “hard” to wash with it. Hard water does not allow soap to suds up and lather as it should. Hard water does not lather well. That’s because it has high concentrations of minerals, leached from calcium and magnesium deposits surrounding the waterway.

Problems With Hard Water

Hard water is generally not harmful for human consumption, but it can cause a stained sink. It can also cause a colored film on other surfaces. Such as the white on this glass. It can also appear green, yellow or brown. As mentioned above hard water can also make it difficult to create suds when washing. It can also create off odors or tastes to your water.

Hard Water Damage to Equipment

A stained sink may look bad, but the bigger problem with hard water is expensive repair and/or replacement of equipment. This is because of plaque build up – deposits of minerals which attach to the inside of pipes, water pumps, water valves and other water appliances. Hard water plaque deposits are exacerbated by heat. So internal areas of water heaters, radiators, furnaces, boilers will be affected even more. Water heaters can develop restricted water flow from hard water. This reduces performance and eventually may result in costly repairs or replacement.

How to Deal With Hard Water

Water softening units remove most of the minerals from hard water. The “softened” water is more compatible with soap. Soft water also extends the life of expensive plumbing, water heaters, boilers and water pumps dramatically.

If you’re handy, you might be able to install a water softening unit yourself. Be careful though, because an improperly installed water treatment system can be more harmful than the problem it was meant to solve. Reddish Brown Stains in the Sink Means Too Much Iron in Your Water - Phone us at 603-330-0592 for info. on free initial water testing and what you can do about iron levels in your water.

Excessive Iron in Your Water Supply
Some parts of NH have a lot of iron ore in the ground, which often results in high level of iron in the aquifer. If you experience reddish brown stains in your porcelain sink or bathtub, it’s likely you have well water with high iron deposits. Barrington NH and Milton NH especially are both known for high concentrations of iron in the ground water.

Iron Staining of Sinks and Bathtubs
Just like metal left outdoors in the elements, iron in your water rusts, leaving reddish brown stains in your sink and bathtub. There are a number of products sold to remove these stains, but without fixing the water supply, they will need to be cleaned again and again.

Stains on Laundry From Iron
Often people will find that they simply can’t get laundry clean enough if there’s a lot of iron in the water. Clothes come out of the washer stained brown, so they add more bleach which ironically makes the clothes more stained! This is because the chlorine in the bleach only increases the browning activity of the iron deposits in the water.

Rotten Egg Smell in Your Water
Another problem caused by too much iron in your water is the smell. Water that is high in iron tends to give off a smell similar to rotten eggs. This is caused by the iron bacteria present wherever there are high concentrations of iron in the water. Left untreated, the water gives off a signature unpleasant, rotten egg smell.

Dry skin? Might be a water problem đź’§

New Hampshire weather is notoriously rough on our skin, no question. Our home heating systems, dry hot air, less time outdoors, etc. all have an impact. But if you have chronic dry skin on a regular basis, you could have a hard water problem. Hard water originally got called this because it was "hard to wash" with it. Soap doesn't lather right, clothes get stained, and it's really bad for your skin too.
