Since 1984, CHIP (Community Housing Improvement Project) has provided emergency home repairs and energy assistance to needy families in Lincoln County, Maine (Alna, Bremen, Bristol, Damariscotta, Jefferson, Newcastle, Nobleboro, Somerville, South Bristol, Waldoboro, Whitefield), at no cost. Most recipients of CHIP's services are elderly, disabled, or single parents with kids, often unable to affo
rd both food and fuel, and without assistance would be forced to choose one or the other. Does:
CHIP, Inc.’s local volunteers and part-time paid carpenters perform home repairs and improvements such as:
Weatherization: weather-stripping, insulation and installing weather skirting on mobile homes. Home Repairs: leaky windows, doors and roofs. Minor construction: wheelchair ramps, doorsteps and entryways. In addition to home repairs, CHIP, Inc. provides fuel assistance during the winter months. CHIP, Inc. sponsors Community Cares Day in September of each year on the first Saturday after Labor Day. This event brings together 100 to 150 volunteers, who, working in teams led by professionals, are able to make repairs ranging from general clean up to roof replacement at upwards of a dozen homes. The homeowners, if they are able, also help. Through CHIP, Inc.’s work and its assistance programs, our community is strengthened and the new bonds of friendship are forged between those who help and those who are helped. Sometimes, the assistance provided by CHIP makes the difference between a family being able to remain in their home or having to move out.
