Owning a hammer, does not make your contractor knowledgeable or competent in construction. Good contractors know how to read basic load tables, footing tables, foundation tables, span tables, AND can draw what is to be built with reasonable accuracy. IF your contractor cannot provide evidence of any of the above, move on. Selecting a competent contractor will save you tons of cash and time. Same goes for friends and family members.

When hiring an electrician ensure he/she is qualified for the work being done and always have the electrical work inspected by a certified electrical inspector. Most house fires are due to poor wiring practices. Your local Code Enforcement Office can help you locate qualified people.
