Making preparations for a giant pumpkin this year. Hopefully we can make it happen ! Got seeds from last years prize winner , over 2000lbs ! Fingers crossed we can make it happen to get at least one giant and a bunch of medium to large size to giveaway this fall.

I told you guys I had a neat little trick and now that it has worked out I’ll share it with you. And it may not even be a trick maybe it’s something well known and I’m just an idiot and if that’s the case keep it to yourself so I can think I’m clever 😂. Was buying specialty sunflower seeds for the patch and had spent couple hundred dollars wasn’t getting great results and was about to throw the towel in. Seen this bag of seed while grocery shopping and thought what the heck let’s do an experiment. Soaked the seeds for a day got them to sprout them just threw them out by the handful after I tilled the ground up. Turned out pretty well. About a week out from blooming. Summer has been so dry it’s stunting a lot of my growth but they’ll still be about 4-5 ft tall for the most part. So there’s a lesson for you. Buy bird seed to grow plants with for next to nothing.

Pumpkin patch is coming together and the arch is starting to fill in. Sunflower circle is coming along nicely too. Went ahead and extended the sunflower to make a horseshoe shape around the patch this year. Planning for the sunflower to bloom towards the end of September. Side note I have a neat little trick I’ll share about that later once I get the results I’m anticipating, or maybe I’ll go ahead and share in a separate post l. Follow along and see if it’s a success or a new learning experience , try not to use the word failure. Trying to make the most of what space I have and as resilient with resources available. If you can tell I get excited growing our pumpkins to share with our friends and neighbors and most importantly the youth. Looking forward to the fall season and spooky fun that comes with it. Let’s find ways to share in the excitement !

Working ground up for sunflowers. Pumpkins have been going for a few weeks now and are established. I expect them to take off soon to cover the archway leading to sunflower circle. You can see in the center there are sunflowers coming up from last years seeds falling off. Along with random pumpkins throughout the yard growing wild. Should be ready towards the end of September and then we will start a Halloween giveaway. Hope to giveaway some prizes for involvement this Halloween 🎃

We’re starting to gear up anticipating the upcoming growing season. I’ve had enough of winter so I’m going to start preparing for fun spring activities. If you guys don’t know our local extension office has soil testing service so you can see what you’re lacking to get optimum results. This will be my first time trying this. I’ve been pushing for a giant pumpkin for several years now and I’m optimistic about getting it right this year.

The first and largest pumpkin we grew this year was 47” in circumference and probably 50lbs or more. The first pumpkin we gave to St. Catherine and you can see it on the steps at the student drop off line. Our way of giving our first fruit to God to ask for community blessings. We’re gearing up for weekend giveaway this Saturday and are super excited about new events coming together. More folks have stepped up to create something special for our youth here in New Haven. Still in the works to see what resources we have and are able to come up with to make something really spectacular.

Sunflowers are all about bloomed out. Didn’t come in as thick as I wanted and the pumpkin arch didn’t either. Still looks cool and we will know what to do to fix our mistakes next year. Our largest pumpkin is 47” in circumference and about 18” tall. Going to start getting decorations out towards the end of this week and we will start an open invitation for people to come by in the evenings for photos. We will announce at that time

The mold didn’t work for this pumpkin. I’m assuming the pumpkin is too fast growing to contour the shapes and instead busted the plastic open. Will have to try on a smaller pumpkin variety.

Put another panel in on the arch. The vines are coming in really good this past week. Hoping the panels will be covered in the small size pumpkins and gourds. Sunflowers coming along good in the circle sunflower room. Also a picture our largest pumpkin so far next to 20 oz Pepsi. Should make for a great photo area
