Happy International Day of Light!

Well-designed lighting makes such a positive impact on our work, and on this International Day of Light, we want to express our thanks to our incredible in-house  lighting designer, Cait Toczko, IALD, CLD, WELL AP, LEED GA. Cait’s dedication to creating beautiful, energy-conscious lighting solutions enhances the quality of the architecture and interiors she touches. In honor of this special day, we are proud to share highlights from select university and multifamily projects where quality illumination enhances comfort, wellness, and the everyday living experience for residents.

Newmanites Dov Feinmesser, Associate Principal and Director of Sustainability and Abigail Carlen, Associate Principal and Director of Marketing made their way over to the Corpotate Real Estate Women (CREW) awards last week to accept three awards as members and representatives of our talented and dedicated project teams at Newman.

Thank you to CREW for honoring Newman alongside The Tower’s team,  Gus Keach-Longo and Jesse Wescott, with a Best in Class award in the senior living category for the renovation and addition of The Towers. We are pleased to share that Newman also received two Honorable Mentions, one in the commercial category for the new Wampanoag Country Club clubhouse and one in the revitalization category for Hill Central, a passive-house certified affordable housing development.

We are proud to be recognized among a crew (no pun intended) of such amazing firms doing impactful work throughout CT—congratulations to all of the awardees and thank you to CREW for hosting such a wonderful event!

It was a pleasure for our team to join our client, Fairfield University at their annual awards dinner last week. Thank you to Fairfield for hosting a wonderful event, and congratulations to all the awardees!

Newman has had the privilege of collaborating with Fairfield University on more than forty projects over the past two decades. We deeply value our strong relationship with the University and we are grateful for their trust in us to create meaningful, impactful campus architecture.

After a night celebrating Fairfield, our team went right back to work on our ongoing projects, including the adaptive reuse of the former school of business into sophomore housing, the Fairfield Prep Barron Arts and Athletics Addition, and other upgrades to dining, athletics, and academic spaces. We can’t wait to see our current projects come to life and look forward to what’s ahead!

Did you know Newman also designs lighting? To further engage our collective knowledge to improve communities, expand boundaries, and exceed expectations, Newman added lighting design to our suite of services in 2022. Led by Cait Toczko, IALD, CLD, WELL AP, LEED GA, who worked on many projects with Newman before joining us as Senior Lighting Designer, our lighting design practice enables us to integrate light throughout our design intentions from concept to post-occupancy.

Cait provides lighting design services for many of our projects at Newman and also works independently with other design firms, including Atelier Cho Thompson, Amenta Emma, and Wiskup Architecture. She also works directly with clients like Fairfield University and Skala Partners.

Cait is an integral part of design teams, developing and delivering effective lighting solutions in a wide variety of project types in the education, commercial, and community sectors. Her impressive list of lighting clients includes 17 universities, 19 corporate offices, 12 library and community organizations, 10 public and private K-12 schools, 9 healthcare institutions, and more.

Some highlights of Cait’s recent work with Newman, as seen in the grid above, include the 18 High Apartments in New Haven, Wampanoag Country Club in West Hartford, Connecticut Hall at the University of Connecticut, Bowman Hall and the Quad Renovation at Fairfield University, the Middle Eastern and North African Cultural Community Suite at Yale University, and the Pond View Apartments in Farmington.

New Haven’s Union Square reached a major milestone Wednesday night, receiving site planning / zoning approval from the City’s Board of Alders.

Newman is working with Glendower Group on the redevelopment of Union Square, the eight acre site across the street from Union Station in New Haven. Union Square is a transformative, transit-oriented mixed use development that establishes a new front door to New Haven while advancing the City’s housing, economic, and placemaking goals.

Newman is collaborating with Dattner Architects on site planning and design of 2490 units of mixed-income housing, as well as retail, community, and commercial uses. Union Square represents a catalytic investment in New Haven’s future, creating housing, economic opportunity, and a dynamic, connected community, and we are honored for the opportunity to contribute to forward movement on this important effort.

See the link in our bio from the New Haven Register to read more about the project.

It was wonderful for our staff to spend some time outside of the office this month at a few industry events!

Newmanites Katelyn Chapin, Cait Toczko, Christian Oncescu, Matt Jurgens, and Abigail Carlen attended the Society for College and University Planning’s North Atlantic 2026 Regional Conference in Hartford, to share knowledge and connect with our collaborators shaping higher education campuses. The next night, Rylie Griffith represented Newman at the AEC All Stars Fundraiser Hockey Game at PeoplesBank Arena, an event led by Red Thread and Leading Edge Construction, LLC in support of Cans for Kids. And a few days before, a group from the office attended the AIA Connecticut’s Masked Marvels Bowling Night in Milford—Matt Jurgens, Reid Mitchell, and Max Geary teamed up to compete against our very own Cait Toczko and the QTL team.
