1,200 snapdragons planted in the field, 1,000 seeds started inside, and a beautiful sunset

So many new dahlia varieties coming to the farm this season. I’ll never get over how these knobby tubers, that look like potatoes, turn into such incredible blooms.

Happy second day of Summer… I mean Spring 😅 We started the week at 28° and somehow landed at almost 90° today… and let me tell you, my body is not on board 🤪

We’re in the thick of it - prepping beds, keeping our ranunculus shaded, hardening off seedlings, and trying to time everything just right.

I’ve got 1,200 snapdragon seedlings ready to be planted, all lined up and waiting their turn. But this heat? It’s a little too much for them (and for me.) So for now, we wait, water, and keep everything alive until the weather gives us a break 🌱

This is the part you don’t always see - the juggling, the guessing, the working with (and sometimes against) the weather. But it’s also where the season really begins. 🌸

It still amazes me that itty bitty seeds grow into tiny seedlings… and then into these beautiful, tall flowers. 🌸 Planting these snaps out in the field this weekend - spring is almost here and I’m so ready for it ☀️

Spring farm tasks have officially begun! 🌱

Our seed-starting shelves will soon be filled with beautiful flower seedlings we’re starting for this season. We planted our first seeds the other day… and only have about 2,000 more to start inside and three times that outside before May 1st. 😅🌱

Last night we constructed a low tunnel over the ranunculus. They love cold weather, but anything below 26°F is too much, so the tunnel helps hold in the ground warmth and protect them.

The forecast is peak Missouri spring chaos — 13°F Monday morning and 73°F next Friday. 🥴

Flower farming is always an adventure. ♥️

Today was 65°, sunny, and perfect… aside from a blister on the palm of my hand 🥴🪏

The ranunculus are finally planted!

Dave cleaned up the yard and finished prepping our seed station, and Noah helped with garden clean-up. 💪🏻

Our last frost isn’t until April 17th, but ranunculus love the cool weather. Once temps stay around 65–70°, they go dormant, so tomorrow we’ll build a low tunnel to keep them happy a little longer.

It’s my first year growing ranunculus, so 🤞🏼 You can’t learn without trying.

I can feel spring creeping in and I’m so ready. This year the field is going to be amazing. 🌸

Anyone else growing ranunculus this year?

Thanks for following along ♥️

It’s wild to think it’s been four months since we dug up the dahlias. Between house projects, basketball, tuber sales, and planning for the coming growing season, winter has somehow crept by and flown at the same time.

I love dahlias, and I hope I always grow them but I never imagined I’d worry this much (literally 12 months a year) about a single type of flower.

In the spring, I’m nervous about too much rain.
In the summer, I’m watching for bug pressure and not enough rain.
In the fall, I’m glued to frost forecasts.
And in the winter, I’m just hoping my storage plan carries them safely back to spring.

But then that first bloom opens.

And I get so excited to share them with our community that every bit of the fuss, the stress, the second-guessing — it’s all worth it. 🌸

Yeah, pretty sure this is how I'll meet my demise. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
