There are stories in the Christian tradition that were never really told…

Or maybe they were told in a way that made us comfortable.

Today I’m working on an icon of Mary of Egypt.

Most people only hear one version of her life
the story of sin, repentance, and the desert.

But when you really sit with her story…
you start to realize something deeper.

A woman who walked away from everything.
A woman who confronted herself in the wilderness.
A woman who transformed so completely that even the desert became holy ground.

Icons aren’t just paintings.
They are a doorway into stories that still speak to us.

And sometimes…
they remind us that the truth of a life is much bigger than the version that survived.

Today and everyday!

For anyone new here ✨welcome.
This is one of my latest paintings, and it lives very close to my heart.

It’s rooted in the Romanesque tradition, which means the goal was never realism. Romanesque work is about presence quiet strength, tenderness held without excess, figures that feel timeless rather than specific. I’m always thinking about stillness when I paint this way. Not emptiness but that deep, steady calm that stays.

The gold leaf background isn’t decorative for me. It’s a way of removing the scene from ordinary time. Gold doesn’t recede the way color does it holds the surface, reflects light, asks you to slow down. Every time I lay it, I feel like I’m stepping into a different rhythm entirely.

When I’m painting pieces like this, something in me softens. My breath changes. My thoughts get quieter. It’s one of the few places where I feel completely connected to the work, to history, to something much larger than myself.

If you’re someone who’s drawn to iconography, sacred art, or work that’s meant to be lived with rather than just looked at, you’re in the right place. I’m really glad you’re here.

Save this if you want to sit with it longer, or share it with someone who loves this kind of work.
