This summer marks the 40th Anniversary of the World’s Fair held in New Orleans. The 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, themed “The World of Rivers - Fresh Water as a Source of Life,” was a six-month event held on the Mississippi Riverfront, with the Louisiana Pavilion located at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Pictured in the first image is the 1982 King of Bacchus, actor and comedian Dom DeLuise, alongside the grandfather of NANO’s founder, August Perez, and Petr Spurney, president & CEO of the World’s Fair. Perez, a native New Orleanian and founder of Bacchus, was the lead architect for the fair alongside Charles Moore, Frank Ghery, and more.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: Il Mercato 🍊✨

Awarded the Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from the Louisiana Landmarks Society, Il Mercato illustrates a captivating story of the revival of an historic architectural gem and its resulting impact in the transformation of the Lower Garden District.

Originally constructed in the 1930s as the “Magazine Street Market”, the venue endured deferred maintenance over the years. NANO’s revitalization, completed in 2017, has transformed Il Mercato into a versatile and artistic full-service banquet hall. Today, the popular venue stands as a cornerstone in the revitalization of the neighborhood, contributing to the emergence of new businesses, increased commerce, and ongoing renovations surrounding the property.

TRAVEL TUESDAY | Let’s travel to Houma, Louisiana to tour two NANO projects on Main Street: Fakier Jewelers and the historic Heyman Building.

Fakier Jewelers: This century-old, family-run jeweler partnered with NANO to redefine the showroom experience for customers and employees from a typical retail ‘behind-the-counter’ set-up to a more collaborative, high-end, and curated environment. Our team completed a full interior renovation of the 5,000 SF storefront, complete with custom-designed glass plinths with specialized lighting, locally sourced pine flooring, and Calcutta marble countertops. The new space strengthens Fakier’s ability to connect with the community while rejuvenating and strengthening its brand in Houma.

Heyman Building: Built in 1891, the Heyman Building was home to the only department store in Houma for over 50 years. NANO turned the challenges of the full architectural rehabilitation into a myriad of design opportunities, allowing the historical nature of the site to inform the interior experience, and seamlessly blending new with old. We envisioned a double-sided public and private design solution that encouraged the community to interact with the historic architecture while providing commercial opportunities on the first floor and five residential units above. This project marked the first Historic Renovation and Tax Credit project in Houma.
