We picked up this fireplace grate a million years ago, and it needed a lot of work to get it back into shape. So, we had a friend’s son weld it together, then I stripped the old paint, primed it, and did a couple coats of this bright orangey yellow. Also, repainted the hearthstone (in a complimentary deep purple) which was in pretty rough shape, too. Finally installed it today, and I’m really happy with how it turned out. The chimney also needs to be repointed, but that’s a project for 2023.

The summer doldrums are always a good time for us to tackle house projects. And, being true to ourselves we’re doing like 5 of them at the same time 😆 One of those is a little sprucing up of the master bath. When we renovated it 8-9 years ago, we had some day laborers repaint and rehang the doors. It was a temporary fix until we had the time and energy to do them right. So, last week I removed them to fix some trim, the door jamb, and so a small floor patch that’s been on the punch list for years. While I love doing almost every kind of DIY/home improvement project, I find stripping paint soul crushing. So, I had Ricca's Architectural Sales dip the doors for us and they turned out great! Obviously, it costs a lot more to have them chemically stripped like this, but it would have taken me at least week’s time in the south Louisiana heat and humidity to strip them, and they wouldn’t be anywhere near as clean as they are now. Not to mention that they almost certainly had some amount of lead paint on them which means wearing a full face respirator ( a nearly unbearable experience in this heat. )

Very excited to get these tuned up with new hardward, and reinstall them soon.

Excited to to have a work crew here fixing up some deferred maintenance on the front porches. Replacing some water damaged trim and fascia, and getting the top deck in shape. Just in time for Mardi Gras, too!

This past week it’s been window repair - fixing some termite and good old fashioned rot, installation of rebuilt windows, and trim installation. The weather and bugs never stop their assault! 😂

Lots of projects happening at the house the last few weeks. LOTS of painting work getting done. And, today, we FINALLY replaced that ceiling fan in the living room. While practical, we hated the look of it. The chandelier matches the ones we already had in the dining room and the lounge. Progress, continues!

Thanks to Jose and Liza Livingston de Calderon for the hand me down teak patio furniture. Sanded it down this morning and treated it all with teak oil. Came out looking fantastic. Now we just need to find some new cushions.

Nothing lasts forever - not even brick and mortar! There are four chimneys with 7 fireplaces in this house. (The one in the dining room was plastered over ages ago.) After 170 ish years, the original mortar and even some bricks are beginning to disintegrate a bit. The fireplace in the rear guest room was in especially bad shape. So, big thanks to Carey and Jake from Staub Window Restorations, LLC. who did a first-rate job in repointing this one this week. We decided to save a bit of $$ on this one and not repoint the entire thing especially since 2-3 others in the house will have to be completely repointed in the near future. Having a crew who clearly communicates and LISTENS, actually knows what to do and which (historically correct) materials to use makes a big difference. If you need to have your fireplaces repointed or touched up, we can’t recommend them enough!

We installed these hanging cabinets in the laundry room/walk-in closet this weekend and just got the counter top back on today. We salvaged them from Jose and Liza Livingston de Calderon’s kitchen since they’re in the middle of a major remodel and these were headed to the landfill anyway. Not only that, but they are from the same manufacturer as the rest of our cabinets in our kitchen and the base cabinets we already had in the laundry room so they matched perfectly. We also refinished the counter top too that we had on there and it turned out great. Still a few things to do (we have to get some glass cut for that missing door, patch the screw holes from the ledger board, maybe install an electric outlet, and find a more permanent solution to the WiFi set up), but we’re really happy with how it’s turning out. And LOTS more storage.

Awakened at 4:30am this morning when part of the drywall fell off of the ceiling in the dining room. We had this same problem in the upstairs blue room a year and a half ago. This was work that was done probably 30 years ago now. We knew it was starting to be a problem in the living room, but had been waiting to get a drywall crew out here to fix it. The clock ran out today. Dust and debris everywhere.
