The dog days of summer are surely upon us, but we’re still here, moving slow and steady.
Here’s a look back at The Blue Lady on St. Charles Avenue, one of my favorite jobs to date. This pictures the many stages of the process for this entryway, matching new wood to old wood, new finishes to old finishes.
Wood is just like us; it gets beaten a bruised and it has scars and blemishes, and original millwork is especially fickle. It can be difficult to make it whole and “perfect”again, but over the years I’ve experimented with all the products you can find. gel stains are a favorite these days, forgiving a myriad of sins when semi-transparent colors won’t do the trick.
For me, it is of utmost importance that I honor these historic homes by giving my best effort to salvage and make good the pieces I can. On most jobs, I’m accustomed to speed and efficiency after so many years in my craft, but some jobs require more patience, more time, more steps. I hope I did her justice.
