A big thank You to the Ulster Garden Club for a wonderful lecture at SUNY Ulster with the fantastic Karl Gercens!
Such an informative and inspiring whistle stop tour of the floriferous bounty of the United States through the seasons.
So glad that I took the out time to attend and listen to this amazing Gardener!

These beauties came from the Duzine/Lenape PTA fundraiser with Alchemy Farmhouse โ€” such a lovely variety of early spring bloomers, and they have not disappointed.

We know. The grass stumps are not exactly a look. ๐Ÿ˜„

Cutting back ornamental grasses in spring is one of those tasks that feels a little drastic but pays off in a big way. Give it a few weeks and those clumps will be transformed โ€” full, lush, and swaying beautifully in the breeze.
โ €
Last year's dead growth sits right over the new shoots trying to push up from the base. Leave it in place and it smothers them. Clear it away and you give the new growth room to come in thick and strong.

This week's spring cleaning highlights! ๐ŸŒฟ

After the winter we had โ€” and that little false-spring detour and this week's frosty mornings โ€” it feels good to be doing our spring openings. Shrubs pruned back, beds cleared of weeds, edges cut clean, and fresh mulch down.

Big thanks to our clients for trusting us with their outdoor spaces! We love getting gardens ready to look their best all season long.

We're still taking bookings for garden openings or maintenance visits in May!

Spring pruning FAQ: Every spring we get the same question: should I cut back my hydrangeas? The honest answer: it depends!

There are five common hydrangea types, and your starting point on whether to prune (and when) is knowing: does it flower on old wood or new wood? Here are some general guidelines:

๐ŸŒธ Smooth hydrangea (H. arborescens) โ€” blooms on new wood. Prune hard in early spring. It can take it, and the new stems will flower by midsummer.

๐ŸŒธ Oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia) โ€” blooms on old wood. Limit pruning to dead or broken branches, and shape lightly after flowering in late summer, early fall if needed.

๐ŸŒธ Bigleaf hydrangea (H. macrophylla) โ€” it depends on the variety. Some varieties bloom on old wood: remove up to one-third of stems after flowering, never before. Reblooming varieties bloom on both old and new wood and mostly just need deadheading and removal of weak stems.

๐ŸŒธ Panicle hydrangea (H. paniculata) โ€” blooms on new wood. Prune in early spring to keep the shape tidy and healthy.

๐ŸŒธ Climbing hydrangea (H. anomala petiolaris) โ€” blooms on old wood and is generally best left alone. Prune lightly right after flowering only.

Not sure what you have or what it needs? Get in touch โ€” we're booking spring pruning now and happy to help get your hydrangeas ready for a beautiful blooming season. www.weirgardens.com

Before the trees leaf out, a handful of small, dainty flowers have their moment marking the start of Spring.

Blue squill (Scilla siberica) carpets the ground in vivid blue by early April (seen here after naturalizing easily in a garden bed). And round-lobed hepatica (Hepatica americana - captured on the Rail Trail in Rosendale yesterday) is one of the true harbingers of spring โ€” if you look closely on the forest floor, you'll see its delicate, papery flowers pushing up through the fallen leaves.

We love these spring ephemerals - a reminder that the gardening season is already underway!

That frost on the ground this morning? A good reminder that the Hudson Valley isn't quite ready for new plantings yet.

But it's the perfect time to get your garden ready for the season!

While the soil warms up, it's the right time for shrub and fruit tree pruning, garden bed clean-up and weeding, and design consultations for new plantings and installations in later spring.

Start preparations for a beautiful, healthy garden now:
