Mr. Frankfurter seems to be settling in nicely to his new life as a Nugget Daddy. He tidbits for the babies, crows when they need to run for cover, and generally does everything a good rooster should do.

One of the unnamed Wyandottes decided to hop the fence to join him almost immediately, so now he has a chicken wife as well.

I let the nuggets out this morning, gave them some feed, and then went inside to start my day. About 2 hours later, I came back outside to give them more water and there was bloody primary feathers in their area and everyone was hiding.

I'm not sure if something tried to eat them or if one of the boys hopped the fence, but either way, Frankie said "Not today!". We get a lot of hawks at the farm but the vultures and roosters keep them at bay. All other roosters are fine, so I am doubtful it was a fight. Frankie is the strongest of the bunch and never would have been beat so thoroughly without leaving a mark.

All nuggets (and the wyandotte) are healthy, safe, and accounted for. Frankie will need some supervision to make sure the bleeding in the feather shafts stops, but otherwise he is very spunky and acting like himself.

I'll call today a win either way.

It's been a long exhausting couple of weeks. Perhaps, we will catch everyone up to speed eventually, but for now, we are drained and the air is heavy.

So, for a bit of sunshine today, I present -- Mr. Frankfurter a.k.a. Frankie the Nugget Daddy.

Frankie has been in rooster jail for about a month now for fighting. The kids were growing tired of dealing with his prison shenanigans, so I made the executive decision to release him and see how it went.

It went poorly....

He immediately picked a fight with Optimus, miraculously got his a** handed to him, and then went to bother Raptor who has zero patience for his nonsense.

With a stew pot being the only other option, I decided to say to hell with it and tossed him in with the Nuggets.

Frankie seems happy and the Nuggets appreciate his presence although they don't understand his excessive tidbitting.

Frankie is people friendly and generally a good boy. He loves the hens and cares for them as a good rooster should, he just hates Optimus with a fiery passion and that conflict spills over to the other boys.

For now, Frankie is the keeper of the Nuggets. I have all the confidence that he will keep them safe or die trying. After all, he is a good boy. We have debated holding a few CX Hens back to see what comes of it, so he may just be a permanent resident in the Nugget Shack if it works out.

While I can't be certain, thus far the feed consumption for the Nuggets appears to have gone down. They are following his lead and eating nature. If it continues, Frankie might be getting a few hens to continue/improve the experiment. Feeding these nuggets is expensive.

Originally, we ordered 8 turkey eggs. At the first candling, 6 showed signs of life. Lockdown started and 3 eggs were witnessed showing a great enthusiasm for life doing the wobble.

Tonight around dinner one egg pipped, then promptly did nothing for hours. I just caught it wobbling again. I get the feeling that come morning, there will be at least one little turkey flopping around in the incubator.

Four turkeys need to hatch to make me happy. One for Thanksgiving and a breeding trio for next year.

Fingers crossed everyone. These turkeys are stressing me out.

Broke out the camera this morning to take some pictures of our *not* favorites. We all know favorites die first, that is Chicken Law.

Anywho... look at these cuties.

We are up to 15 Hatched + 6 Pipped out of 25.

As excited as I am about the SOP eggs that we ordered, these Backyard Mix babies are so much fun. Everyone is tagged with leg bands so we can keep them mostly straight. Speculating about what they will look like grown up is so much fun. Its like the slowest revealed surprise ever.

Once they are a little bigger, I'm hoping we can figure out which of our seemingly bare legged birds are throwing feathered shanks into the gene pool. So many of these babies have feathered shanks but our green/blue laying flock does not. I'm assuming its Frankie or Optimus but who knows.

That blob is two chicks. Progress has been had. :)

The chickie nugs in training arrived by mail today. Unfortunately, one looks like its suffering from Failure to Thrive. Its half the size of its siblings and is having some difficulty walking.

We cleaned it up and put it in the incubator to give it a fighting chance of making it through the night. At least now, if it doesn't make it, it can pass peacefully in warmth and comfort rather than being trampled by the others.

It made a real fuss in the incubator flopping around everywhere.

Niko and I finished our TV show for the evening and heard screeching coming from the incubators. We thought the little nugget might be in distress. Nope, it was sleeping, but this little one had sprung from it's shell.

Pip to hatch can take up to 24 hours. This little one managed it in 2 hours. 3 more are pipped that we can see. The chickie nug making a fuss seems to have encouraged the others to start hatching.

Now, we get to go to bed. Can't wait to see how many little ones are waiting in the morning. Hopefully the nugget pulls through and can join the layer chicks in the brooder tomorrow. This little one is not pleased with the bag, but we need it to sort and tag them.

Day 14 for the first batch of eggs that went into the incubators. So many of the chicks were wiggling and jumping about.

I realized after the fact, that you can see the heartbeat in this egg as the chick moves around.

New life will always be magic to me and I love having front row seats.

The new incubator arrived in the mail yesterday. Two days ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, its a bit chompy and lacks all maternal instinct. I think we may have to return it.

On the plus side, the last of the hatching eggs should be arriving in the mail soon. The kids did the math today, roughly 160 eggs will be hatching in May assuming all goes well.

Today marked Day 4 for the chickens and Day 6 for the turkeys.

28 chicken eggs from our flock went into the new incubator to test if it was working properly. It appears to be working fine.

23 chicken eggs are showing healthy babies. 3 have shells too thick to see through. 2 eggs appear to be duds.

The turkeys have 6 confirmed babies growing, 1 possible growth, and 1 possible dud. Its still too early to be sure with the turkeys.

The hatching eggs we ordered should be here by Friday and then the incubators will be fully loaded and then some probably.

17 days to go for chickens, 22 days to fo for the turkeys.
