April so far:

80 degrees one day, and a last-minute frost the next — running outside at dusk to bring the seeds into the kitchen, but a handful of tulips and throw sheets over the fruit trees and hope for the best 🫣.

Anyone else been on a roller coaster this month?

Most gardens look good, but the best ones smell incredible too.

Fragrance is one of the most overlooked elements in garden design, and it’s often what people remember most. Certain scents have a magical way of bringing you right back to a place, a season, or a specific moment in time.

The key is layering - choosing plants that bloom at different points in the season so there’s always something in the air, from late winter through fall.

These are some of the low-maintenance, high-fragrance plants I come back to again and again.

Save this for your next planting plan.

If you’re afraid to prune your hydrangeas, watch this. ☝️

Also take heart knowing that hydrangea paniculata and arborescens varieties are some of the easiest to work with - they bloom on new wood, which means you have a lot more flexibility than you might think.

Follow this simple step-by-step approach to cutting them back in early spring to encourage strong, healthy growth.

Save this to reference next season.

A privacy fence does so much more than block a view or contain pets and kiddos - it helps define the outdoor space.

When designing one, there are a few key things to consider: height, material, and how it’s actually constructed (emphasis on this last one!).

Most residential backyard fences are around 6’ tall, but layout and gate placement matter just as much as height (be sure to account for changes in slope).

From there, material choice sets the tone. Whether it’s the warmth of cedar, the durability of hardwood, or the low-maintenance consistency of vinyl.

And just as important as how it looks is how it’s built. Proper footings and structural details are what keep a fence upright and performing well over time.

It’s a functional element, but when done thoughtfully, it becomes a foundational part of the landscape design.

Save this if you’re planning a fence for your backyard this season.

So many people think they have a black thumb.

In reality, most of the time it comes down to one thing — buying plants without a clear plan (it’s the same idea as don’t go to the grocery store hungry!).

Before you head to the garden center this spring, focus on three things:
• sunlight• water• and season of interest

Get those right, and everything becomes a lot easier (and greener)!

Save this to reference before your next plant run.
