🇩🇪 German Plum Cake (Zwetschgenkuchen)🥰
This authentic German Plum Cake recipe, known as Zwetschgenkuchen or Zwetschgendatschi, is made just the way you know and love it from Germany! A yeast-based cake with juicy plums and a sweet streusel topping, this extraordinarily delicious cake is one of my very favorites

Like most German cakes, this German plum cake is not overly sweet. It has a nice balance between sweet and tart with just a touch of warmth from the cinnamon. The riper the plums the sweeter the cake will be.

This German plum cake will keep for 2-3 days. And although the streusel will get soft, the cake tastes even better the day after baking as the juices from the plums have time to pe*****te the dough.

🇩🇪 Traditional Sauerbraten 😘
For this sauerbraten, I found two slightly different handwritten versions of my Grandmother's recipe. Born in Nekkar am Rhein in 1904, she naturally learned to cook traditional German meals as a young woman and didn't rely on a cookbook. I try to capture the nuance in this. Serve with potato dumplings.

Sauerbraten is a German roast of marinated meat, traditionally beef. Since it’s generally made with tougher cuts (usually the rump roast), the meat is marinated for days at a time. The roast is sliced and served with a gravy. In some recipes, the gravy is made with gingersnaps.

🇭🇺 Authentic Hungarian Goulash (Gulyás)😋
A thoroughly authentic Hungarian Goulash recipe with a depth and richness of flavor that will satisfy both body and soul. Hungary’s national dish, this traditional gulyás captures everything that has made this dish so beloved across the globe. It is simply out-of-this-world delicious!

Goulash, or as Hungarians call it, gulyás, means “herdsman.” Its origins date back to the 9th century Magyar shepherds as a simple meat and onion stew prepared in heavy iron kettles known as bogracs. In the 15th century invading Ottoman Turks introduced a new spice to Hungary, paprika. While the rest of Europe remained lukewarm towards this red chili pepper from the New World, Hungary embraced it and paprika has since become a defining element of Hungarian cuisine.

🇩🇪 Homemade Soft German Pretzel Buns (Laugenbrötchen)😋
Laugenbrötchen (German Lye Rolls) are a traditional German bread specialty known for their distinct savory flavor and striking appearance.

Before baking, these rolls are dipped in a food-grade lye solution, which creates their signature glossy, deep-brown crust and chewy texture.

Sprinkled with coarse salt, they feature a crisp exterior and a soft, fluffy interior, making them a beloved staple for breakfast or sandwiches across Germany

🥰Classic Wiener Schnitzel Recipe
This is a classic Wiener Schnitzel recipe! It’s made with breaded veal cutlets that are fried to perfection. It’s simple, delicious, and the best part is that its ready in just 30 minutes!

Wiener Schnitzel is a traditional German (and Austrian) dinner. It’s made out of thin veal (or pork) cutlets that are breaded and fried crispy. The name “Wiener” refers to Vienna, Austria, where the dish is said to have originated.

🇩🇪 Sweet and Sour German Red Cabbage😘
This classic German red cabbage recipe is one of our favorite ways to prepare red cabbage—sautéed with butter, sprinkled with sugar and balsamic vinegar, and simmered until tender. The sugar and balsamic vinegar give the sautéed cabbage a delightful sweet and sour glaze.

When the holidays come round, we take the cabbage up a notch, adding chopped apples, onions, and, if we have them, roasted chestnuts. It's wonderful served alongside pork chops or a pork roast!

🇩🇪 German Apple Cake 😋
German Apple Cake (Versunkener Apfelkuchen) is a traditional German dessert that is so easy to make even if you aren’t totally kitchen confident! With a simple batter that rises up and bakes around the apples this easy apple coffee cake is the perfect everyday dessert that tastes best with a dollop of whipped cream on top.

This traditional apple cake is served with a dusting of powdered sugar on top and a big dollop of whipped cream. But for special occasions, I love to serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. So delicious!

In Germany, this cake is often served in the afternoon for “coffee and cake” time (Kaffee und Kuchen). It’s a coffee break at around 3 pm where people sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee with a piece of cake, a pastry, or cookies.

🇩🇪 Beef Rouladen (German Beef Rolls)🥰
German Beef Rouladen is a delicious and hearty dish made with thinly sliced beef that’s rolled around a tasty combination of bacon, mustard, pickles, and vegetables and braised in a rich brown gravy until tender. It’s great for special occasions, Oktoberfest celebrations, or whenever you’re craving comfort food!

When summer ends I find myself craving heartier foods, and these beef rouladen (aka German beef rolls, beef birds, or steak rolls) are one of my favorites!

🇩🇪 Traditional German Spaetzle😘
Perfect texture and perfect flavor, these traditional German Spaetzle are just like you know and love them from the Swabia region of Southern Germany!

One of the most beloved foods in Germany that tourists go home talking about is Spaetzle, the famous German egg noodles from the Baden-Württemberg region of southwest Germany. This area is also known as Schwabenland, or Swabia. I grew up in Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg, watching my Mom and Oma make Spätzle – I learned from the best!

🇩🇪 German Cucumber Salad (Gurkensalat)😋
Eating this cool and crunchy cucumber salad always reminds me of Germany. It’s commonly included as part of any Salatteller (salad plate) in German restaurants. A Salatteller will often feature a serving of carrot salad, radish salad, lettuce greens, potato salad and this cucumber salad. They’re the best salads ever!

While creamy cucumber salads are also popular in Germany, this oil- and vinegar-based version tends to be served more frequently in restaurants, at least where I’m from in southern Germany.

In Germany you can buy dry dill dressing mixes that come in small envelopes, often the Knorr brand. You add oil and vinegar and add it to your cucumber salad or leafy greens. But you can so easily make it from scratch – and it won’t have any of the fillers, additives and preservatives in it!

🇩🇪 Kartoffelpuffer (German Potato Pancakes)😘
A quintessential German treat beloved across every region of Germany, Kartoffelpuffer (German potato pancakes) are not only a favorite dish to serve at home but are also a popular street food found at local Volksfests and holiday events like Fasching, Karneval and Christmas markets.

In particular these German potato pancakes bring back memories of going to my Oma and Opa’s house. Throughout my childhood and through young adulthood my Oma would regularly make these when we went over to their house. My brother and I would play cards at kitchen table with my Opa while my Oma stood over the stove with the crackling sounds and smells of frying Kartoffelpuffer filling the air. Before long, plates of hot Kartoffelpuffer were set out on the table and we helped ourselves to a sprinkle of powdered sugar and generous heaps of applesauce. My Oma knew to make big batches of these Kartoffelpuffer because my brother and I could rarely get enough of them.
