This is Native honeysuckle---
(The more commonly seen yellow and white/ gold& silver flowering honeysuckle is Lonicera Japonica Honeysuckle. It was imported in the early 1900s as an ornamental plant-- it became invasive & outcompeted native plants for sunlight & nutrients)

We heard to support Native Plant wete WE can---
Ornamentals have their place, but all too often exceed habitats if WE do not exert care and oversight

Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) is blooming in sunny woodlands edges. Itโ€™s another one of our beautiful natives that many people might initially mistake for an escaped ornamental. This native vine grows across the eastern US and itโ€™s often available at native plant sales. In yards, Coral Honeysuckle does well along sunny fence lines and it will climb a trellis. As you might suspect from its tubular red flowers, itโ€™s pollinated by ruby-throated hummingbirds. One of its distinguishing features is the fused opposite leaves just below the flower cluster. Have you seen Coral Honeysuckle in bloom this spring?

Save the bees? Save the NATIVE bees!

Did you know Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are not native to North America but were actually brought over from Europe by colonists in the 17th century. Honeybees are now naturalized to North America and as we know are still used today to provide us with wax, propolis and honey. There is nothing wrong with honeybees, we love them as well, but when scientists say โ€œsave the bees' ' honey bees are not who they are talking about. Actually, over the past 50 years honey bee hive numbers have increased by 45%. Scott Black, the executive director of the Xerces society has stated there are more honey bees today than ever before.

In the United States we have 4,000 native bee species and in Virginia alone we have 400 native species! They all are in trouble. Did you know:
๐Ÿ1 out of 6 native bee species are regionally extinct

๐Ÿ40% of bee species are at risk of extinction

๐Ÿ52% of bee species are currently seeing a population decline

๐ŸThe American Bumblebee population has declined by 89%

What can you do:
As we always say, plant native to provide resources and habitats for our native pollinators! We also emphasize not using herbicides, pesticides or fungicides as they can kill our native bees and other native insects.
