Neotia Haveli, Ramgarh
AUR is restoring an almost 200 year old Haveli in Ramgarh, Shekhawati. The project explores materiality and memory of migration for the Marwari business community who migrated from Ramgarh to newly developed colonial centre of Calcutta to set up businesses. Shekhawati is known for its havelis and frescoes on the facade. The Ramgarh Haveli restores surfaces with limeplaster and new additions are in limestone.

Port Heritage Museum at Indenture Memorial Complex - Kolkata
A museum that archives the built history of the oldest colonial Port in India and the story of migration of indentured labourers across plantation colonies. The weathered steel facade is an indexed grid of a labourer’s sleeping module inside the ship. It addresses both the material memory of the site and the human memory of labour migration. It translates scale - making infrastructure and the intimacy of displacement visible together.

AUR (Architecture) along with Dronah (Exhibition Design) has designed the Port Heritage Museum with the Kolkata Port Trust. The museum is currently under construction on top of a 19th century dry dock along the Hooghly waterfront in Kolkata.

The exterior facade distills the spatial logic of the indentured labourers’ sleeping berths within the ship’s hull into an architectural register. During the voyage, bodies were packed into compressed compartments—standardized and fixed. The façade translates this condition of enforced proximity into an indexed grid, transforming the ergonomics of confinement into an architectural datum.

Constructed in weathered steel, the exterior resonates with the patina of existing and adjacent industrial port structures, implanting the building within the material memory of the site. A rigorous orthogonal armature—horizontal and vertical members in weathered steel—organizes the facade, with inset steel back panels completing the assembly. On the subsidiary volumes, this tectonic vernacular is recalibrated at a finer grain, producing a denser texture while maintaining formal continuity across the ensemble.

AUR PROMOTIONS | April 2025

AUR - Architecture Urbanism Research is proud to announce and acknowledge the meaningful contributions of two of our valued team members in New Delhi. Akash Ganguly and Vinay Porandla has been promoted to Project Architect from Architect since April 2025.

----------------------------------------
Akash Ganguly is a Project Architect at AUR New Delhi. Akash has led the design process with the Creative Director for several meaningful cultural, institutional, and hospitality projects which include museums, cultural centers, sports academy, boutique hotels and resorts. His key projects include Port Heritage Museum with Kolkata Port Trust, Ramgarh Haveli Restoration and Heritage Hotel in Shekhawati, Wellness Centre and Hotel in Santiniketan, Pavilion at Asia Horticulture Society and Indian Diaspora Heritage Centre in Kolkata. He has previously worked as an architect in Kolkata with QX Design on tea tourism in North Bengal and social projects in Sundarbans and in Hanoi with Takashi Niwa Architects on projects in Vietnam. He holds a B.Arch with distinction from Amity University, Kolkata where this thesis was nominated for COA National Awards for "Excellence in Architectural Thesis". His awards include the World Architecture Festival Competition ‘Isolation Transformed’ 2020. His journey in architecture bridges tradition and technology exploring grounded solutions based on theory. Growing up around the world’s largest temporary art festival, Durga Puja, watching as the city builds, adapts and transforms for millions of visitors, he realized the impact of culture and history on architecture and human behaviour.

Vinay Porandla is a Project Architect and Urban Designer at AUR New Delhi. Vinay is leading the design and coordination of AUR’s largest institutional projects including Hi5 Sports Academy for marginalized kids outside of Mumbai and Techno India Manchester City World School in Kolkata. His methodical and precise approach to architecture is evident in the process and system-based framework followed in each project. Vinay has been educated as an architect in the USA and the UK. He holds a B.Arch from Iowa State University, USA and an M.Arch in Urban Design with distinction from the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London. His Thesis at the UCL “Decomposing Temporalities” inquired into the underside of cities while exposing waste hidden in the periphery. Previously he worked in Digital Design and Architecture in the UK and India - Above in Colchester, UK, Designer Plans in Essex, UK, Edifice Consultants in Bangalore. He received the AIA Iowa Emerging Professionals Award in 2020, has been a competition finalist at NOMAS (National Organization for Minority Architecture Students), USA in 2019 and has been on the Dean’s List at Iowa State University for academic excellence.

AUR - Architecture Urbanism Research won an AIA Long Island Excellence in Architecture Archi Award in 2024 for our Buddhist Pilgrim Cafe project within the historic site of Buddha's birth in Lumbini. The 60th Annual Award ceremony was held at the Garden City Hotel, Garden City, New York.

Although a humble low-budget project, its importance for the local population as an initiative completely run by local women is significant. The project will not be possible without the trust and vision of Stefania Abakerli from World Bank, the management skills of Sanjay Saxena from TSCPL for facilitating everything, Sarayu - TSCPL local site architect, and the contractors. Internally, Subhradip Roy for leading the effort and managing the site remotely during covid.

It was an opportunity for us to restore and work with a Kenzo Tange designed structure. The project, at the site of Buddha’s birth, is an important part of the larger ‘Buddhist Circuit’ project, being steered by the World Bank in collaboration with local governments and tourism bodies. The greater project aims at unlocking Buddhist heritage in South-Asia, the region of its origin, acting as a driver for socio-economic progress.
