Why does my chicken act like this?

Two of my girls will suddenly spread their wings just a bit, crouch down like they’re almost sitting… and then just freeze. It’s so strange to watch.

What really throws me off is that these were my most skittish, least friendly chicks. Now they’ll just stand there like statues and even let me pet them—something I’m definitely not used to.

None of my other chickens behave this way, so I’m wondering… is this normal, or should I be a little concerned?

She does it like clockwork every single day… and I can’t figure out why.

Something changed in my flock this year—and I can’t quite figure out why.

I’ve got a healthy group of hens, all between 1–2 years old. Last summer, by the start of the season, we were collecting around 20–22 eggs a day from 28 hens. This year looks completely different. From 24 hens, we’re only seeing about 9–12 eggs a day, and most days it’s closer to 9–10. It’s been like this for weeks now.

The biggest change we made was introducing our first rooster back in early March. It didn’t take long to realize it was a mistake—he just wasn’t a good fit for our flock, and honestly, he hated me and would come after me every time I stepped outside. We rehomed him about two weeks ago, but I’m wondering if the flock is still off balance or stressed from the change.

Everything else has stayed the same—same feed they’ve been on for 2 years, and scratch with worms only as a treat 2–3 times a week. I’m just trying to figure out what could be causing this drop and how to get back to closer to 20 eggs a day again. We’ve even had to turn away customers lately 😣

I’ve dealt with plenty of things trying to get my chickens… but I was not prepared for what my chickens would do to something else.

It was Christmas Eve in NW Indiana. I went out like normal to collect eggs and check on my flock when I noticed a few sparrows hanging around the run. Didn’t think much of it at first—until everything suddenly went sideways.

One sparrow lands on the ground… and Susie, my white hen, completely loses it. In seconds it’s pure chaos—feathers flying everywhere, Susie takes off like a little raptor with the sparrow, and the whole flock is chasing and squawking behind her. I jump in trying to stop it and save the bird, totally forgetting about Hai Hai (my ā€œattack devilā€ roo)… and of course, I get hit from behind while I’m out there flailing like a maniac.

Then just like that—it’s over. Susie swallows the sparrow whole. Everyone instantly goes back to normal like nothing ever happened. All that’s left is a sprinkle of feathers on the ground and me standing there questioning everything I thought I knew about my ā€œsweetā€ flock.

That whole thing lasted maybe a minute, but it’s stuck with me ever since. Are they really as innocent as I thought? What else have my little raptors handled when I’m not looking? And I’m not even gonna lie… as I stood there trying to process it, Jelly Roll’s ā€œI Am Not Okayā€ started playing in my head.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s experienced something like this šŸ˜…

I’ve got 39 chickens here in Maryland, and this brutal weather is making things tricky in a way I haven’t dealt with before.

I’ve got roosts with a p**p shelf underneath, and I’ve been using multi-purpose sand on the shelf. I sift it every morning, but lately the p**p — and even some of the sand — is freezing solid.

This is new for me, and not working like it used to.

Has anyone found a better alternative to sand that’s easier to sift and does a better job absorbing moisture in freezing temps? Any ideas or tips would really be appreciated.

Coyote Central over here today… and the girls are absolutely determined to tempt fate.

We’ve already spotted three coyotes on the property in broad daylight, and it’s starting to feel a little too close for comfort. My husband thinks we should ā€œtake them out,ā€ but I’m really not on board with that approach.

At the same time, running outside and yelling isn’t exactly a solid plan either.

We definitely need a better, safer solution here… what would you do?
