STAIN OR TUNG OIL?

It depends on the look and protection you want:

Stain

* Changes the color of the wood.
* Penetrates the wood but provides little protection by itself.
* Usually needs a topcoat such as polyurethane, varnish, or oil.
* Good if you want to darken, lighten, or match existing woodwork.

Tung Oil

* Enhances the natural color and grain of the wood.
* Provides some water resistance and protection.
* Leaves a natural, low-sheen finish.
* Easier to touch up than polyurethane.
* Good for historic brownstone doors, trim, and woodwork when you want a natural appearance.

For a Brownstone Front Door in NYC

A common approach is:

1. Strip the old finish.
2. Apply stain (if a color change is desired).
3. Apply several coats of marine spar varnish or exterior-grade clear finish for UV and weather protection.
