What does it take for an architecture practice to endure beyond its founder?

In a recent feature by The Architect’s Newspaper, Rafael Viñoly Architects is highlighted as a case study in succession planning following the passing of Rafael Viñoly in 2023. The article explores the firm's transition from a founder-led practice to a collaborative partnership structure designed to ensure continuity of leadership, design excellence, and long-term client relationships.

As the article makes clear, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to succession planning. Today, Partners Jim Herr, Bassam Komati, Stephanie Tsang, and Román Viñoly lead the practice, building on more than four decades of experience while advancing the values that have guided the firm since its founding. By examining a range of firms and leadership models, the story highlights the many ways practices can prepare for leadership transitions in ways that reflect their unique culture, structure, and long-term goals. unique culture, structure, and long-term goals.

Thank you to The Architect’s Newspaper and writer Jerry Elengical for including our firm in this important conversation about leadership, continuity, and the future of architectural practice.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the completion of the Tokyo International Forum, one of Rafael Viñoly Architects’ most celebrated works and a defining landmark in the heart of Tokyo, Japan.

To commemorate this milestone, former project team members, colleagues, and friends gathered in Tokyo for a special reunion. More than 80 attendees joined the celebration, including Rafael Viñoly Architects Partner Jim Herr, AIA, NCARB, who played an integral role in bringing this extraordinary project to life.

Completed in 1996, the Tokyo International Forum has spent three decades serving as one of Japan’s premier destinations for culture, performance, conventions, and international exchange. Its halls and public spaces have hosted everything from concerts, exhibitions, and global conferences to civic events and programming associated with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Three decades later, the Forum’s soaring glass-and-steel structure remains one of Tokyo’s most recognizable civic landmarks and enduring symbols of contemporary architecture. Its lasting architectural significance was recognized with the 2024 AIA Twenty-Five Year Award, honoring projects that continue to demonstrate exceptional design excellence and public impact long after their completion.

We were also delighted to meet the team who now steward the Forum and continue its legacy as a vibrant destination for future generations.

TONIGHT: Rafael Viñoly Architects’ Partner, Bassam Komati, AIA, OEAB, will speak at the panel discussion The Expanding Practice: Rethinking the Path of Architecture as part of this year’s NYCxDESIGN festival program.

Moderated by Ramona Albert, AIA, the discussion will bring together Bassam Komati, Jacob Reidel, AIA, and Andre Soluri, AIA, SARA, to examine the evolving nature of architectural practice and the increasingly interdisciplinary role of architects today.

As firms expand beyond traditional boundaries into research, strategy, development, branding, and product design, the conversation will explore how architectural education – with its foundation in critical thinking, systems-level problem solving, and design rigor – continues to prepare practitioners to operate across a broader and more integrated field of practice.

The National Medal of Honor Museum has been named to the 2026 World’s Most Beautiful Museums List by Prix Versailles, an international award program that recognizes projects worldwide for excellence at the intersection of architecture, sustainability, and cultural impact. One of just seven institutions honored globally, and the only one in the Western Hemisphere, the recognition underscores architecture’s capacity to give form to shared civic ideals.

“It is a tremendous honor for the National Medal of Honor Museum to be recognized on the Prix Versailles World’s Most Beautiful Museums List for 2026,” said Bassam Komati, Partner at Rafael Viñoly Architects. “We are especially moved by the award’s celebration of architecture’s narrative power and its ability to reveal strength through harmony, sensitivity, and shared purpose – values deeply aligned with this project. Shaped through close collaboration with our client and an exceptional multidisciplinary team, the Museum gives form to a shared vision for a civic place of reflection and inspiration, honoring those who serve the common good while affirming architecture’s capacity to embody our highest ideals.”

Médano by Viñoly has been named a new pilot project in the Design for Freedom initiative by Grace Farms Foundation.

Set along Uruguay’s coast just outside Montevideo, the 425-meter-long development is part of a global effort to eliminate forced labor from the building materials supply chain, advancing more ethical, transparent sourcing through research and real-world application.

As one of a select group of pilot projects, Médano by Viñoly contributes to a growing movement across architecture and construction to rethink how materials are sourced, specified, and brought to site.

Grounded in a belief that every project is inherently civic, the design brings together environmental performance, material integrity, and human impact from the outset.

We’re proud to be part of this important initiative.

Established by the United States Congress in 1991, March 25 commemorates the anniversary of the first Medals of Honor awarded in 1863. Today, we honor the more than 3,500 recipients of the United States’ highest military decoration for valor – individuals whose actions embody courage, sacrifice, and service above and beyond the call of duty.

We also take this opportunity to recognize the National Medal of Honor Museum, which opened its doors in Arlington, Texas one year ago. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the 102,000-square-foot building is defined by a singular gesture: a monumental volume lifted above the ground, an architectural expression of the weight and strength of the values it represents.

Since opening, thousands have encountered stories shaped by moments that defy simplification – acts of valor defined by split-second decisions and lifelong consequences. The Museum does not contain these stories; it brings them into focus, leaving visitors with what endures: a sharpened sense of responsibility and a deeper understanding of service beyond self.

On April 1, Rafael Viñoly Architects will participate in a webinar hosted by the Yale School of Architecture, bringing together leading voices to examine how decommissioned power plants can be transformed into public assets. As thousands of fossil-fuel facilities face obsolescence, the conversation underscores the urgent need to rethink demolition in favor of adaptive reuse – retaining embodied carbon while unlocking new civic, environmental, and economic value.

Marco Ortíz RIBA ARB, Managing Director EMEA – London, will present the transformation of Battersea Power Station. a landmark example of how large-scale industrial infrastructure can be reimagined as a vibrant, mixed-use community anchored in sustainability and civic life.

The session will also explore global case studies, including Bankside (now Tate Modern), as well as projects in New Haven, Norwalk, Chicago, and Havana – highlighting strategies that prioritize environmental remediation, nature-based solutions, and equitable community access. Particular emphasis is placed on ensuring these transformations benefit frontline communities historically impacted by industrial pollution.

Within this context, the Battersea Power Station master plan demonstrates how heritage preservation, high-density mixed-use development, and a site-wide low-carbon energy strategy, including a district-scale Combined Cooling, Heating, and Power (CCHP) system, can catalyze long-term urban regeneration.

Why is Uruguay emerging as one of the most compelling places in the world for long-term investment?

In a recent interview with InfoNegocios Uruguay, Román Viñoly, Partner at Rafael Viñoly Architects and CEO of Integrated Developments, reflects on the country’s stability, civic culture, and quality of life – conditions that make it possible to conceive architecture and development on a generational horizon.

The conversation highlights Médano by Viñoly, a 50,000 m² residential development currently under construction along the Uruguayan coast. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the project introduces a new residential typology that combines the autonomy of individual homes with the shared infrastructure of a multi-family building, while prioritizing sustainability, landscape preservation, and long-term stewardship of a unique coastal site.

Rooted in the legacy of Rafael Viñoly, the project reflects a broader vision: development that strengthens its environment and community while creating lasting architectural value.
