John F. Kennedy reportedly wrote in a 1939 letter to his father that “Palestine was hardly Britain’s to give away,” reflecting on what he viewed as contradictions in British foreign policy in the Middle East during the era of the British Mandate.

The observation is often cited in historical discussions surrounding the origins of the Israel–Palestine conflict and Western involvement in the region prior to the creation of Israel in 1948.

Scientists have developed a new solar-powered desalination system that not only converts seawater into clean drinking water but also recovers valuable dissolved minerals from the remaining brine instead of treating it solely as waste.

Traditional desalination plants produce large volumes of highly concentrated salty wastewater, known as brine, which is often discharged back into the ocean and can affect nearby marine ecosystems. The new approach is designed to reduce that environmental impact by extracting useful minerals from the concentrated solution before disposal.

Powered by solar energy, the system also reduces the amount of external energy needed for desalination while eliminating direct carbon emissions during operation. Researchers have demonstrated that minerals such as lithium and other industrially valuable elements can be recovered from the brine, potentially creating an additional source of revenue while reducing waste.

The technology is still under development, but it could offer a more sustainable option for coastal regions facing growing freshwater shortages. According to the United Nations, around 2.2 billion people worldwide still lack access to safely managed drinking water, increasing interest in more efficient and environmentally responsible desalination methods.

By combining renewable energy, freshwater production, and mineral recovery in a single process, the technology represents a promising step toward making desalination more sustainable while addressing both water security and resource use.
