The gut renovation of 35 Worth Street reinvents the heavily altered Tribeca loft building: we discovered the magic and potential in a humble structure, the new design augments the scale of the building, transforming the “no-style”, scarred facade, into the physical representation of the Institution. The addition of the rooftop portico, which hides the bulkheads, contributes to rebalancing the scale of the street.

Last week the Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously approved the restoration and penthouse addition of this Atlantic Avenue loft building. The restoration is unique because it also brings back the use to the original live/work. The penthouse addition is inspired by the small rooftop cottages that were all the rage in the '20s in New York. .trastudio

Always an exciting moment: art placement mock-up at the lobby of 35 Worth Street, the loft building renovation just completed by . The artwork is one of Robert Traboscia's "banners" series, the image, a composition of photos of the 35 worth's facade, celebrates the act of crossing the threshold to the interior, by inviting the visitor to reflect about the exterior of the building. The design of the facade connects to the adjacent landmarked buildings: folded aluminum pilasters add directionality and create unexpected shadows echoing cast-iron details, the subtle articulation of the spandrels recalls the large rusticated stones of nearby historic buildings. The metal façade panels, which TRA has used widely on projects, intentionally differs from ornate historic detailing to highlight the contemporary, but contextual aesthetic. .trastudio reuse
