PROJECT OF THE YEAR SUBMISSION | BUCHERER 1888 - TimeMachine NYC

When the world's oldest luxury watch retailer trusts you with their flagship floor, there's no room for error.

We were called to restore the dark herringbone hardwood floors inside BUCHERER 1888 at TimeMachine NYC - including the Cartier and IWC Schaffhausen boutiques - without shutting down a multi-million dollar retail environment.

The Challenge:
• High-gloss herringbone in a luxury gallery setting — every imperfection shows • Work around glass display cases, lighting, and custom millwork • Zero dust, zero odor, zero damage • Overnight schedule to be open for clients next day
Our Solution:
NYC Floor Pro executed a full dust-controlled buff & recoat system. We sealed and protected all cases with full containment, used HEPA dust extraction on all machines, abraded the existing dark stained herringbone, and applied Bona Traffic GO for that flawless, gallery-level satin durability and fast cure.

The Result: A deep, rich, museum-quality Satin finish that reflects the watches as well as it holds up to Madison Avenue traffic.

Proud of our crew who treated this like surgery.

Location: Bucherer 1888 TimeMachine, NYC
System: Dustless Abrasion + Satin Bona Traffic GO
Floor: Stained American Walnut Herringbone

NYC SUMMER ALERT: Your floors are about to expand ☀️

High humidity = cupping, buckling, squeaks.

Do this week:
1. Run AC / dehumidifier — keep under 55%

2. Check under rugs — trapped moisture causes black spots

3. Don’t sand a cupped floor while it’s wet — let it dry first!

We’ve fixed 5,000+ NYC floors.

White Oak Now Commands 63% of Pros

White oak and matte is winning this year for three simple reasons that actually matter to homeowners in NYC - look, lifestyle, and longevity.

For the look, white oak is just more neutral. Red oak has that pink undertone that pulls orange under warm lights, white oak is beige-to-taupe and takes to those light, natural, European stains that everyone is pinning right now. The grain is tighter and more linear too, so in a herringbone or wide plank it feels calm, not busy. And because the wood is a bit harder and more closed-grain than red oak, it stains incredibly evenly - you can go ultra-natural, weathered gray, or mid-brown without blotchiness.

Matte finishes dominate for a similar reason - people want wood to look like wood. High gloss was showing every micro-scratch, every dust particle, every footprint, which in a Manhattan apartment with big windows is a nightmare. A low-sheen, soft matte finish like a natural oil look or waterborne matte poly diffuses light instead of reflecting it. It hides daily wear, feels softer underfoot, and photographs better. The NWFA has been tracking this shift for a couple years now and 2026 is really the tipping point where matte/natural is the default ask, not the alternative.

Love your dog but hate the scratches? 🐾

Our go-to for NYC pet owners:

• Matte or Satin finish — hides scratches 10x better than gloss

• Lighter Natural White Oak — less visible hair & scratches

• Bona Traffic HD finish — toughest finish we use

• Wire-brushed texture — camouflages daily wear

Plus: trim nails every 2 weeks!

3 Designers Agree: Herringbone Owns 2026 — and we agree too.

We've been installing a lot of it lately and we get why. That V-pattern instantly turns a floor into a focal point. In entryways, kitchens, and open living rooms, it adds movement, warmth, and that custom, high-end feel you can't get from a straight plank.

Our most requested look right now? Premium white oak herringbone, custom stained on-site, finished in a soft matte. It's timeless but feels completely fresh for 2026.

If you're thinking about it, herringbone is all about the install. Keeping the pattern perfectly tight and sanding it flat takes real craftsmanship — that's where we come in.

Would you put herringbone in your home? Entryway, kitchen, or whole apartment?

The #1 Mistake That Ruins Wood Floors
Your wood floor's worst enemy isn't foot traffic — it's WATER. 💧

We see this every week in NYC: wet mops, steam mops, and puddles left to sit. It causes cupping, dark stains, and peeling finish.

The RIGHT way to clean:
✓ Barely damp microfiber mop only
✓ Spray on the mop, never on the floor
✓ Wipe spills immediately
✓ Never use vinegar, steam, or Murphy's Oil Soap

NYC in July is brutal on hardwood, especially oak. That cupping you see where the edges lift higher than the center of the board happens fast when indoor humidity sits above 60% for a few days straight.

Here is a practical prevention guide you can use for your own jobs and share with clients:

Keep that 30 to 50% sweet spot. The updated target most pros are using now is 35 to 45% in summer if you can hold it. Get a couple of reliable hygrometers, one for the main living area and one for the lowest floor or most humid room. Don't trust the thermostat alone, it doesn't measure moisture.

Run the AC consistently, don't shut it off when you leave. In New York apartments the AC is your first dehumidifier. Set it to hold temp, not just blast cold, so it keeps cycling and pulling moisture. If the home doesn't have central, a standalone dehumidifier rated for the square footage in the living room or hallway does the same job. Empty it or run a continuous drain line and aim to keep it under 50%.

Ventilation matters. Kitchens, baths, laundry - any steam needs to exhaust outside, not into the apartment. If a client loves to open windows on humid days, that is when floors swell. Closed windows + AC + dehumidifier is safer when it's 85 degrees and 80% humidity outside.

For the floor itself, make sure there is expansion space still open. Shoe molding and base that is caulked shut will trap movement and turn cupping into buckling. On new installs, acclimate the wood longer than usual right now, NYC is sitting so humid that a quick 2-3 day acclimation isn't enough. Check moisture content of subfloor and boards with a pin meter before you lay.

And quick triage if you walk into a job that's already cupping: don't sand it flat while it's swollen. Bring humidity back down to 35-45% slowly over 1-2 weeks, let the boards settle, then assess. Sanding a cupped wet floor just creates crowning later.
