….Architecture, among a host of other STEM fields, is inhibitive to women and people of color. According to the U.S. Department of Education, African-Americans receive roughly 7.6 percent of bachelor’s degrees and 4.5 percent of doctorates in STEM disciplines. The number of pilots, engineers, doctors, and architects with a license to practice diminishes to 1-2%. There are a number of studies and books that explore theories regarding why this is true - lack of exposure, racial and gender discrimination, and socio-economics being central. Yet, where are the tools that encourage the young Black kid from Anywhere, USA to get past the challenges that are sure to come. To think these were summer projects. Update: Proposal for a and in NY. Estimated flood heights for this area are around 8’-0” high, roughly the height of an average first floor (floor to ceiling). As a result we elevated the house to comply with regulations but we didn’t want to have an obtrusive street facing exterior stair. The lower level functions as a covered terrace and hidden entry vestibule. strategies were also implemented. Now we await approval.
