Dirtworks Landscape Architecture, PC was founded on the belief that excellence in design can heighten life’s experiences, honoring both the site and the individual to offer opportunities to connect to the larger world. Our practice is dedicated to enhancing the essential human quality of identity by creating spaces that bridge differences in age, ability, and culture through shared experiences. De

sign solutions that emphasize a close connection to nature we believe are essential to the health and well-being of ourselves and our communities. One of the strengths of the firm is its ability to balance institutional needs with individual needs, distilling complex programmatic and natural systems with individual experience. Since 1995, Dirtworks has sought projects that explore how design can improve the human condition. Grounded initially in the enhancement of personal health, and often designing for individuals with complex medical needs, our work has expanded over the years to encompass an ever-larger conception of health, including community and environmental health. We believe these form a continuum that must be approached holistically. This integrated approach to design is best practiced on collaboration. Strengthening the firm’s creativity is our broad organizational base, allowing us to work closely with our clients so that we may respond to diverse needs and challenging sites. Regional national and international specialists, are often enlisted to aid us to both articulate and solve today’s specialized problems so that our designs are appropriately dynamic, cost effective, and engaging.

Congratulations to our friends at & on receiving the Community-Centered Design Grant!

“The grant supports projects that demonstrate a strong commitment to expanding community engagement beyond traditional requirements and deepening participatory design practices. Community engagement is a foundational process through which design professionals collaborate with residents and stakeholders to shape urban environments that are equitable, inclusive, and responsive to local needs.”

Ooms is a 180 acre nature preserve located in Columbia County. In collaboration with Columbia Land Conservancy, Dirtworks developed a master plan that included more ADA friendly walking trails, seating opportunities, areas for outdoor recreation and a reconstructed boardwalk.
The new boardwalk design accommodates wheelchair users with a companion walking along side. The design also features benches for bird watching, moments of pause and to serve educational groups.
The site’s mascot, the Meadowlark, inspired the boardwalk’s deck patterning. Through recordings of the bird’s song, we viewed them as spectrograms. A spectrogram is a visual presentation of how frequency on a sound spectrum changes over time. This was an effort to understand how persons with a hearing impairment enjoy bird calls. The spectrogram revealed a patterning that we then distilled into the deck board pattern. Additionally, the board patterns move with the flow of traffic to ensure that the micro casters of wheelchairs or canes do not catch and create trip hazards.
We consulted with doctors from The Lighthouse Guild, a center that supports those with visual impairments. Their guidance helped us understand how to make the boardwalk more comfortable with a continuous kick plate to help enforce the feeling of safety and comfort.
Working with local contractors and suppliers, we specified white oak framing to limit pressure treated wood chemicals from this sensitive ecosystem. 📸 .by.scott
