Three years after the funeral of my mentor, architect Arata Isozaki, I returned to Japan to see a retrospective exhibition of his work in a museum he designed in Mito City, an hour north of Tokyo. I had previously visited this cultural center in 1989, shortly before it was completed. It is called Art Tower Mito, and includes a 100-meter tall titanium-clad tetrahedral observation tower, commemorating the centennial of the city. I also visited Isozaki’s gravesite at a temple in Kyoto.

I recently saw the opera La Gioconda at an extraordinary new cultural center designed by Renzo Piano in Athens. The center houses the National Opera and the National Library, and provides beautiful public spaces. What a fantastic addition to the city.

I was in Shanghai recently to see a major retrospective of my mentor Arata Isozaki at the Power Station of Art. The exhibition was being planned before his death last December. It was a fitting tribute to his extraordinary career. A 1:15 scale model of his visionary housing proposal for Tokyo was created outdoors for the exhibition.

In today's New York Times, Michael Kimmelman recounts the history of efforts to fix the home of the New York Philharmonic. It has just reopened after a $500 million renovation, and is now called David Geffen Hall. In 2002, Arata Isozaki was shortlisted for a competition to design a whole new building. He asked me to collaborate with him, and we formed a team with another shortlisted architect, Richard Meier. This photo is Isozaki's proposal for the hall interior (rendering by Dbox.). Lincoln Center later scrapped the idea of a new building and instead decided to do another more extensive renovation. This renovation by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects and Diamond Schmitt was just completed.

I walked by the Bass Museum of Art on my way to Art Basel last month and was pleased to see it looking so good. It is hard to believe it has been four years since our expansion was completed.
