I tested PVC vs composite decking using a 30-lb weight to measure deflection. PVC bent twice as much as solid composite, and scalloped composite landed in the middle! Watch the full decking comparison video on the channel now. Cheers!

Gable Dormer Roof Framing

This illustration demonstrates the structural anatomy and framing techniques used to construct a gable dormer within an existing pitched roof. Dormers are architectural extensions that project vertically from a sloping roof, designed to create additional headroom, usable floor space, and natural light via window openings in an attic or upper level. The image pairs a clear, labeled 3D schematic with a real-world construction photograph to highlight how new structural timber integrates with existing rafters and masonry walls.

System Components

Main roof ridge: The highest horizontal beam at the peak of the primary roof structure where the main rafters meet.

Dormer ridge: The top horizontal beam of the dormer extension that establishes its peak and supports the upper ends of the dormer rafters.

Dormer rafters: The sloping structural timbers that form the pitched roof of the dormer itself.

California valley: A framing method where the dormer roof is built directly over the existing roof decking or rafters, creating a internal drainage channel where the two slopes intersect.

New LVL trimmer: A reinforced Laminated Veneer Lumber beam installed alongside existing rafters to support the increased structural load of the dormer.

Headers: Horizontal structural beams installed at the top and bottom of the roof opening to transfer structural loads to adjacent trimmer rafters.

Wing wall and Front wall: The vertical timber stud frames that form the side and front enclosures of the dormer structure.

Window frame: The rough opening framed within the front wall designed to house a vertical window unit.

Overall Analysis

The combination of the technical diagram and the physical build highlights the complexity of retrofitting a dormer into a standard roof line. By utilizing reinforced framing members like headers and LVL trimmers, builders can safely cut through existing rafters to open up the roof space. This structural system successfully bridges traditional masonry support walls with modern timber framing to expand a building's internal volume.

For the first time, invited a handful of creators to their annual Product Innovation Showcase and allowed filming on the product floor. We got to spend a few days in Las Vegas wandering the largest Home Depot setup I’ve ever seen.

At this event they highlight all of the new products coming to stores for the year, and I had the opportunity to take you all behind the scenes with me. This is a highlight of some of my favourite tool product demos. More of my favourite products coming soon.

For the first time, Home Depot invited a handful of creators to their annual Product Innovation Showcase and allowed filming on the product floor.

At this event they highlight all of the new products coming to stores for the year, and I had the opportunity to take you all behind the scenes with me.

This past week, I met people across the entire organization, from store associates and managers to executives, and one thing stood out:
A genuine “here to help” attitude and a real pride in the brand and the customers they serve.

That mindset is something I respect. It also aligns closely with how we’ve built Home RenoVision DIY over the last decade, always putting the viewer first and focusing on helping homeowners succeed.

I also had the chance to connect with many of the brands behind the products, getting a firsthand look at what’s coming this year. There’s some exciting innovation happening, especially in making projects more accessible for homeowners. I’ve got more content coming out over the next few days highlighting my favourite finds.

Thank you to the Home Depot team for the incredible hospitality.

Here’s a pro tip: when you want to screw in on an angle, start straight on, reverse, and then adjust to the angle you want and you’ll be ready to drive it. You’ll never slip or split and it’s perfect every time.
