This home in western Michigan floats over the dunes, following their ridgelines while capturing views through the trees to Lake Michigan. Concept models help us to refine the building’s form & understand the relationship to the landscape so the massing, significant indoor/outdoor moments, and material relationships are clear.

It’s been very rewarding to design comfortable places for students to hang out & study with friends at the new Student Learning Center for the Fu Foundation School of Engineering & Applied Sciences at Columbia University. Plush banquettes surround the perimeter of the open work area. The supergraphics of binary code is a playful nod to the computer science faculty who teach and advise students at the Center– and yes, the 1’s and 0’s actually translate into something that students who are “in the know” will be able to decipher!

Sharing some views framed by nature, to the Chatham Residence. We love working with the existing topography and natural ecosystems inherent in a site. In this case, the existing forest merges with the home-- the leaf canopy creates arcs of shadow and light that inspired the roof forms; native birch trees and woodland ferns give the entry sequence a lush texture. Scuppers drain rainwater off the roof, expressing season rites of passage as a design moment to celebrate.
