Back to the renovation and the preservation of our California Spanish Colonial classic and iconic Saltillo floor tile. Despite, the kitchen was a complete gut renovation, I wanted to keep the essence of the house and that meant keeping the 50 year old patina terra cotta floor. ONLY 35 pieces of a 12 x 12 Saltillo tile were needed.
This is where the story gets interesting. Saltillo tile is handmade in Mexico along with anything that might accidentally fall into or walk on it - ie cat paw prints, leaves, ants etc.😆- while it drys naturally outdoors. As a handmade product it also varies widely in tonal coloring. Well, the production process was hard for this idealist interior designer to embrace but remember I want to keep my existing terra cotta floors!!!
After waiting for 12 weeks for my 35 pieces of replacement Saltillo tiles they arrived far from looking like the agreed upon control sample from the vendor. By the way, this was my 4th attempt of buying various terra cotta tiles in search for a match in thickness, size, surface texture AND color.
The tile-setter was scheduled and i wanted my kitchen finished. So, knowing this was the final tile and matched all the criteria except for color - a pretty big deal for interior designer - i came up with a solution! I’ll stain it with the same magical stain color that was used on various woods during the kitchen finish out.
The unglazed tile took the thin application of stain AND it matched the existing tiles!!! SUCCESS!!
Next week, all the Saltillo tiles will be striped and resealed. I’m praying all goes smoothly.
Hope you enjoyed the interior design story. Feel free to ask any questions about Saltillo tiles or any other interior design questions.
Completed kitchen pictures to follow in about a month. Still doing finishing touches and accessorizing!!
