Project Sangha, Yangon. WIP. Inspired by the history of collective housing in South Asia, the project proposes collective functions to improve people relationships, promote culture, and preserve heritage while simultaneously implementing accessibility to resources and services. Sharing resources is at the center of an environmental strategy that allows the community living in the units to recycle materials and water, promoting a community-led housing practice. The construction of this project focuses on renewable local resources such as Pyinkado (Xylia Dolabriformis) timber, a dense and strong hardwood grown in large quantities in the region for the structure, locally sourced bricks for the envelope, metal for the roofing material, and the cladding of the collective modules.
The project is a collaboration with client Ivan Pun and architect’s agent model by .regan Structure Consultants :

Reconfiguring the traditional organization of domesticity is central to unpacking and transgressing the social and political form of the space that protects our life. In the middle of the current housing crisis, new configurations emerge that break the physical barriers of the room subdivisions, private and public, historically symbolizing the regime of accumulation, wealth, and gender segregation. Eliminating these physical boundaries allow one to find other forms of collective living, opposing the individualization of life promoted by capitalism. In the Knolls co-living project, the external circulation and ground level become a living space for the community as an extension of the units and a respite from the sun. Architensions + Andy Bruno
