Building a skyscraper isn't easy. But when it's complete, there's a topping out party.

Find out how we’ve constructed 3 World Trade Center from the inside out. The New York Times gives a snapshot.

In a construction technique rarely used in New York office towers, the concrete spine of 3 World Trade Center is being built before the steel perimeter.

Fifty years ago on April 25, 1966, Kathy Riley began her career at Hunt Construction Group (known at that time as Huber, Hunt & Nichols). At just 21 years old, she was the youngest person in the company. When she began working at Hunt, there were two women that had completed 20+ years with the company.

“I thought that was the greatest thing that I had ever heard. It was at that time that I set a goal for myself. I was determined to stay with the company for 20 years. I think I have exceeded my goal.”

She started working as a secretary on a jobsite and eventually transferred to the main office in Indianapolis, IN. While on-site, she filled in wherever was needed. Her main duty was as a secretary, but she also did simple accounting, shopped for supplies, and even cleaned the trailer.

Congratulations to Kathy on 50 years with the Hunt team. She has dealt with many different situations throughout her years at Hunt. Kathy added, “I continually learned from each experience.”

Rhiannon Cooper, Senior Construction Engineer in Construction Services, joined us from Melbourne in January 2011. She transferred to Denver in December 2015, where she is currently doing pursuit management until she finds the next big project. Rhiannon enjoys the flexibility to move around the world and work on major projects, along with AECOM having such a rich history. Out of all of the projects she was able to work on; her favorite was the West Gate Bridge Strengthening, as she was able to follow the project throughout its many phases.

Rhiannon had the following to say about IWD, “International Women’s Day is a chance for everyone to reflect and realize that there really aren’t that many women in our field, particularly the construction side and especially on site. Step one is to recognize there is a problem. Having worked in both consulting and construction on site, I have first-hand experience the absence of women in technical roles on site.”

Thank you Rhiannon for all your hard work and dedication!

Gina Fernandez, Civil/Structural Department Manager from our Energy, Infrastructure and Industrial Construction (EIC) business line, started as an intern back in February 2005. Upon graduation from University of New Orleans, Gina became a full-time employee and has since been located in New Orleans. She loves the diversity in challenging projects offered here at AECOM – one of the most remarkable being a program of scrubber projects for fossil power plants.

“International Women’s Day is an acknowledgement of the historic struggle for women’s equality by highlighting current successes.”
