Sage and Coombe Architects

Sage and Coombe Architects Sage and Coombe Architects has worked on a variety of small and large projects in and around New York City. Private clients include the Buckley School, St.

For more than twenty years, Sage and Coombe Architects, a WBE practice, has worked on a variety of small and large scale projects throughout the City with a particular emphasis on public, cultural and institutional design. To achieve the highest quality of result, the office has cultivated a group of complementary professionals with a long history of working together, devoted to making great archi

tecture meet the needs and aspirations of its clients. Sage and Coombe has remained small by calculation in order to strengthen its creative energies and maintain active working relationships with their clients. For each project, a core design team is assembled to focus its efforts under the direction of Jennifer Sage and Peter Coombe. More than half the office is LEED-accredited and the majority of project work is now being completed in BIM software (Revit). We believe there are many solutions to any design problem and that the best work emerges from collaboration between all members of the design team - from client to contractor. We draw inspiration from the specific site and culture of the client and institution. We try to think and imagine before we draw and we are always open to new ideas. We believe there is always room for well-tested innovation and of course, humor. Sage and Coombe was selected twice each for the Design Excellence initiatives at both the Departments of Design and Construction and Parks and Recreation. Other clients have included the Noguchi Museum, the Bronx River Art Center, the FDNY, the NYC Economic Development Corporation and the New York Public Library. Francis College, the Our World Neighborhood and Democracy Prep Charter Schools.

We’re thrilled to share the opening of the new all-electric Maplewood Library this Saturday, July 5th — a project close to our hearts and rooted in community, connection, and care.

Designed to feel within the park, the new library invites light, life, and learning with open views, generous outdoor spaces, and thoughtful accessibility throughout.

We’re honored to have collaborated with and so many passionate staff and volunteers who made this vision a reality.

Let the sunshine in! ☀️

We started our fifth annual celebration of for the summer solstice a day early since some of us WFH on Fridays. Grateful for our new corner space, which employs several excellent daylight design techniques: large windows, high window heads, multiple light angles, and shared light between spaces.

Every year during Daylight Hour from noon to 1 PM, we join hundreds of others in switching off the lights to celebrate the ever-changing and carbon-free light from the sun.

Our Sustainability Working Group recently reported our 2024 data for 2030 Commitment — our fifth consecutive year! We’re proud to stand with 400+ firms committed to pursuing a net-zero future.

Recent sustainability highlights include installing over 1800 square feet of green roof across multiple projects and completing the 157kW photovoltaic system at the Maplewood Memorial Library. We’re looking forward to advancing our sustainability efforts in 2025 and have some exciting projects in the works, including our first mass timber structure!

Earth Day is a perfect moment to celebrate the progress we’ve made in our sustainability initiatives and reflect on how much more needs to be done. We’re proud to have just completed our fifth year reporting data as an AIA 2030 Commitment signatory. Big thanks to everyone who helped gather and analyze the numbers!

A few insights from this year’s reporting:

1. Our portfolio held steady with a 52% energy use reduction from the baseline.

2. We continue to pursue project-specific energy modeling, with modeled projects accounting for nearly 1/3 of our total reported square footage.

3. We’re up to 159,000 sq ft of reported projects!

Progress is incremental, but every square foot counts. Here's to continued momentum and collective climate action. Pictured: a 157 kilowatt array of Cradle to Cradle certified photovoltaic panels that recently came online at our project.

Recapture is transforming 60+ acres of inaccessible riverfront land into a community park including Garmany Cove, a regional trail extension, and complementary commercial development right on the Hartford-Windsor line.

We are thrilled to be part of the team and develop together with a master plan for the new Riverfront Park — recently we continued this journey with a community engagement workshop at the Windsor Ave Community and a fresh Winter Walk on Site.
