After 75 years of continuous use, this private beach club in Hobe Sound was reimagined to preserve long-standing traditions while modernizing operations.

The design looks to early 20th-century precedents and the architectural language embraced by the Club’s founders in the 1930s, drawing from the traditional styles of East Coast communities. Interpreted in a Florida context, the architecture responds to its setting while maintaining continuity with the Club’s origins.

Set between the lush, rolling hills of Montego Bay and the pristine blue waters of the Caribbean, Eclipse at offers guests an exclusive experience — one that is inspired by Jamaican culture and deeply connected to the beauty and ecosystems that surround the resort.

“The reimagined accommodations for Eclipse uses a collection of hand selected furniture and color palettes to encourage indoor-outdoor connection” says Emma Feeney, Lead Interior Designer at Hart Howerton.

To bring that vision to life, Hart Howerton’s architects, interior designers, and landscape architects worked closely with local artists and artisans to shape a luxury experience unique to its setting. Organic materials found on the property help weave the resort together, connecting nature and the sea to create a complete environment for guests.

“We were translating a feeling — that particular ease of a coastal summer — into architecture.” Teddy McCarthy, Partner.

Located on the North Shore of Long Island, this Oyster Bay residence reimagines an existing home as a shingle-style retreat overlooking the Long Island Sound, shaped by the coastal traditions of Maine and the owner’s childhood summers spent there.

Retaining the original foundation while expanding the footprint, the design introduces a more fluid composition defined by asymmetry, flared rooflines, and a series of connected volumes organized around a motor court of oyster shells. Exterior detailing such as scalloped shingles, oval windows, and dark navy trim establish a playful but disciplined architectural language that continues inside.

The Hart Howerton Fellowship turns 20 this year. As our first fellow, what Michael Murphy built following his fellowship speaks for itself:

For two decades, the program has given emerging architects a foundation to grow from, a place to ask bigger questions early in their careers. Michael Murphy was the first to come through it, and what he built from there speaks for itself: MASS Design Group, Butaro Hospital, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and now his book, Our World in Ten Buildings.

We were delighted to host Michael in conversation at our San Francisco office last week, reflecting on his trajectory as a model for a career centered on purpose and values.

Michael, thank you for setting the example for the fellows who have followed and will follow in your footsteps. We are proud to invest in the next generation of leaders in our profession.

Santa Lucia Preserve was designed for generations.

Nestled in the hills above Carmel Valley, this 20,000-acre coastal preserve is home to 300 families, while 90% of the land will remain permanently untouched. The master plan wasn’t built around density or yield; it was conceived as a complete environment–the land itself is the amenity, and the community’s greatest offering is the chance to truly live within nature.

Every trail, gathering place, and homesite was carefully considered. Not just for the families who would arrive first, but for the children who would grow up here, and their children after them. The kind of place that becomes part of who you are.

Art in Practice is a dedicated space for our team to slow down, pick up a new medium, and engage with the world around them as observers and makers. Watercolor, charcoal, oil, sketch. In our studios, in museums, in the landscapes and cities we work within.

Drawing is a tool by which we learn the design proportions, scale and details of timeworn and beloved destinations. We believe that sharpening our eye and training our hand help us envision the next generation of extraordinary places, armed with a mastery toolkit.

What informs your creative process outside of the work itself?

This private residence was designed, in collaboration with , to feel as though it has always belonged to this landscape. Stone with a sense of permanence, timber that reveals its grain, finishes that deepen with every passing season.

The great room anchors the home with a vaulted ceiling, a substantial stone fireplace, and an opposing plaster hood. Moving inward, the atmosphere shifts. The palette deepens, spaces grow more intimate, and each room carries its own character without losing the thread of the whole.

A look inside the villas of one of the most exclusive golf courses in the world, as featured in .

Hart Howerton served as master planner and architect for the project, approaching the villas as an essential part of the APOGEE experience. The goal was to create private retreats that feel connected to the life of the club, the landscape, and the view.

A defining idea behind the villas is the relationship between indoors and out. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, deep overhangs, and clerestory windows blur that boundary, allowing the homes to open naturally to the course while still feeling comfortable and protected.

As Jim Tinson, Partner and CEO at Hart Howerton, told ELLE Decor: “We create places, not projects.”
