It is with profound sadness that the Black Rock Coalition mourns the passing of a literal arts community giant, Danny Simmons Jr., who we lost over the weekend. Danny built a vibrant network of artists, many of whom were family members of the BRC, from Brooklyn to Philadelphia, spearheaded several arts initiatives in the nonprofit arts sector, co-founded Rush Philanthropies and Rush Arts, The Corridor Gallery (Brooklyn) and Rush Arts Philadelphia Gallery (Philadelphia), created Def Poetry Jam and launched the careers of many Black creatives. He was an immense art talent himself, a prolific painter and designer, a deep and imaginative poet, author and playwright. He sat on several boards, including the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Public Library, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Conference of Artists, and was a past Chairman for the New York State Council on the Arts. He collaborated and organized with different arts institutions all across the country, including Miami Art Basel and the Houston Museum of African American Culture.

But most importantly, he was deep in the cut with the Black arts community, always expanding our collective space and visibility and standing firm on our right to be in those spaces. He was an organizer and unifier and a deep well of sage counsel for everyone who came into his orbit...

We express our heartfelt condolences to Danny's immediate and extended family. We all stood much taller upon his broad shoulder. We are now left with gigantic shoes to fill...

We love you, Danny. Plain and simple. We shall forever strive to "stay fly" so we don't have to "get fly"...

🎬 AN OFFICIAL PREMIERE: "The General" at the Pucung Film Festival

We are honored to announce that "The General: Vietnam in the Age of To Lam" has been selected for a headline screening on the Flow Stage at this year’s Pucung Film Festival.

As one of the festival’s most prestigious stages, the Flow Stage is reserved for stories that demand our full attention. By placing this documentary in such a prominent spotlight, the festival highlights the critical urgency of its theme: the global reach of a regime that challenges the very foundations of European security and Slovak justice.

This film, directed by Laura Brickman, was hand-picked by the organizers for its investigation into the rise of To Lam and the infamous 2017 abduction case. It is a story that the Pucung team believes is essential for the Slovak public to confront, especially given the lingering questions surrounding the Slovak government’s role in that diplomatic crisis.

The Event:
Where: Flow Stage, Kasárne/Kulturpark, Košice
When: Saturday, May 16
Post-Screening Discussion: An exclusive conversation with director Laura Brickman and renowned investigative journalist Monika Tódová, moderated by Zuzana Petková.

Don’t miss this Kino premiéra to witness a story that bridges the gap between Southeast Asian politics and European security.

“Women’s answer to Ken Burns’ Jazz”

That phrase has followed film "The Girls in the Band" since its first screenings — and it captures the film’s aim clearly enough: to document the history of women instrumentalists in jazz, from the 1920s onwards, and place them where they’ve always belonged — inside the story, not at the margins.

Directed by Judy Chaiken, it traces multiple generations of musicians, from early big-band pioneers to modern composers and improvisers. It highlights players whose contributions were often under-recorded, under-credited, or written out of standard jazz narratives altogether.

Indeed, Herbie Hancock (who was interviewed in the film), reportedly brushed away tears of joy when he watched it.

The musicians featured include figures such as Melba Liston, Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland, Peggy Gilbert, Clora Bryant, and many others — artists who worked at the highest level, often in environments that weren’t designed to accommodate them.

The Girls in the Band doesn’t present itself as a final word on the subject. Instead, it opens a door — inviting listeners to look again at the familiar story of jazz, and notice who was there all along.
