JLGA Transforms Flood-Damaged Space into a New Surgical Training Hub
Super Storm Sandy devastated a NYC medical school’s 30,000 sq. ft. basement and mezzanine back in 2012. JLGA took on the challenge—not just rebuilding, but rethinking. Now, this space houses a world class Surgical Training Center, complete with a lecture hall, cadaveric dissection lab, and high-tech observation area.
Functionality is key: the space easily shifts from a classroom to a teleconference hub. It also includes a research core, Cryo-EM Microscopy Suite, and lounge. To counter the lack of natural light, JLGA layered in warm lighting and modern finishes, creating a bright, inviting atmosphere.
Beyond aesthetics, JLGA tackled major obstacles—removing barriers, replacing mechanical systems, and introducing flood protections. This project proves that great design isn’t just about beauty—it’s about resilience, adaptability, and innovation.
