Something a little different in the woodshop! 🪵⚡

Working on a few cherry charcuterie boards and adding some unique designs using a process called Lichtenberg wood burning, also known as fractal burning.

The process uses high-voltage electricity to create branching, lightning-like patterns in the wood. No two patterns are ever exactly alike!

Once the boards are cleaned up, sanded, and finished, the natural beauty of the cherry really comes through, along with those unique patterns.

One year ago, Honey and Baby joined our family as our foster horses. 🐴❤️

They were having a hard time at our neighbor’s farm. Mom (Honey) was struggling to get enough nourishment while feeding her baby. They were both a little undernourished, and winter was coming.

With 13 acres of fenced pastures and woods, our neighbor asked if we’d take them in so they could get healthy without competing with the other horses for food.

We knew absolutely nothing about horses, but the whole family was all in!

It’s been a great year watching them grow and get healthy. Baby went from a tiny, shy little thing to a big, beautiful horse. We loved watching her run around the pasture, and she absolutely loves her b***y scratches! 😂

But after a year, we realized it was time to send them home. Baby needs to socialize with other horses, and she’s getting big enough to need proper training.

To be honest, there were mixed feelings in the Barry house. We’d gotten pretty attached!

I spoke with our neighbor about making arrangements to bring them home.

Well, I think Honey and Baby heard us talking!

The very next day, they found a break in the fence where a tree had fallen and headed home on their own! 😂

Today, Tyler and I spent the day clearing the tree and fixing the fence. Just as we were wrapping up, who should come strolling by but Honey and Baby!

They hung around for some loving and plenty of scratches. (Pretty sure they gave that repaired fence the stink eye! 😂)

Then they wandered off back into the woods.

I know we’ll see them again. They’re right next door! All I’d have to do is shake a feed bucket and holler, “Dinner time, girls!” and they’d come running.

Of course, next time they might bring the whole herd! 🤣

It’s been a fun year having these two around. We’re sure going to miss seeing them in the pasture every day. ❤️🐴.

Putting the new bread knife to the test! 🍞🔪

We made the knife… now let’s see if it actually works! 😁

Picked up a fresh loaf of rosemary bread and put the new wooden bread knife to work on one of our wavy walnut and maple cutting boards.

I’d say it passed the test! Nice, even slices without smashing the bread.

After the test. we couldn’t let all that fresh bread go to waste! A little olive oil and seasoning for dipping made for a pretty good reward. 😋

I really enjoy making things that are not only unique, but useful too!

The mystery project is revealed! 🪵🍞

I’ve been dropping hints about another project during our wavy cutting board series. Well, here it is!

A handmade wooden bread knife!

Here’s a quick look at the process of making one, from cutting and shaping the wood to the finished knife.

And naturally, I had to try it out with some fresh rosemary bread on one of our wavy cutting boards. 😁

I’d say it was a success!

🪵 You Pick It… I’ll Figure Out How to Make It! 🤣

After all the fun we’ve had with the wavy cutting boards, I’ve been looking at some ideas for future projects.

I’ve narrowed it down to eight designs, ranging from fairly simple to downright complicated!

Some would be pretty straightforward. Others might require a little patience, a lot of glue, and possibly a few new words that aren’t suitable for social media! 😂

But here’s where YOU come in!

Which one would you like to see me attempt next?

That’s a wrap on the wavy cutting board series! 🪵🎉

After lots of cutting, gluing, sanding, and a few challenges along the way, the boards are finally finished!

There’s nothing quite like applying that first coat of oil and watching the colors and grain come to life! 😁

A big THANK YOU to everyone who followed along, voted on their favorites, and shared comments throughout the process. It’s been a fun project!

Busy morning in the shop! ☕🪵

Got an early start before the sun came up — and before heading to my day job! Spent some time cleaning the wavy cutting boards and getting the rough sanding done.

Then I stepped outside and was greeted by this beautiful sunrise! 🌅🐴

Some mornings remind you why you love living in the country.

Not a bad way to start the day! 😁

🪵 The Wavy Cutting Board Series Continues!

Well, sometimes the plan changes once you get into the shop! 😂

I had planned to make the walnut/maple wavy checkered board tonight, but then realized I needed TWO wavy boards to make that pattern. And one of those was dedicate to remain wavy. Oops!

So, a little change of plans! I used the cherry/maple boards to create the wavy checkered pattern and glued up the second walnut/maple wavy board so it’s ready for the next step.

Here are a couple of pictures from tonight’s progress!

🎥 I’ve also got a video coming soon showing the process of creating the wavy checkered pattern. It’s pretty cool watching it all come together!

And stay tuned! This weekend I’ll be sharing pictures of the finished, oiled cutting boards. Can’t wait to see that grain pop! 🔥

It’s still a work in progress but the creek and bridge work is underway. While this won’t eliminate the potential flooding, it should help with the erosion which got pretty bad during the historical summer rains we had in Perry County.
