The 1200-1900F temperature range for earthenware is considered “low fire” in ceramics, and doesn’t get talked about much around here, where we have ample resources for higher temperature clays and kilns - but low fire likely makes up somewhere between 70-80% of all ceramics that have ever been made over the past 30,000 years or so - and that percentage is much higher if you include the brick and tile industry!

So let’s talk about it -

“Raku” Workshops are every other weekend from June-November!

These all day immersive workshops explore a variety of firing techniques ranging from 12th century Eastern Europe to 16th century Japan to 20th Century America.

You bring the pots, we provide everything else.

Digging for black gold with .falleiros - We fired her little handmade, stone burnished vessels to 1800 degrees before fishing them out of the kiln red hot to drop and bury them in sawdust, igniting a fire and then smothering it - starving the flames of oxygen, infusing the pots with carbon, and turning the red clay into a deep black - similar to how the Black Pottery of Oaxaca is fired, only we’re using a propane kiln and separate sawdust bin rather than a pit or wood kiln.

Check out our “Raku” Workshops on our website if interested in learning more about various low range atmospheric firings - We hold them every other weekend from June- November!

And reach out if interested in a private 1:1 firing like this one!

A successful first firing of the season on a beautiful day in Newburgh w/ our friend .falleiros - Bel is getting ready for an exhibition, and brought this small element over for that traditional atmospheric treatment.

We fired these little handmade, stone burnished vessels to 1800 degrees before fishing them out of the kiln red hot to drop and bury them in sawdust, igniting a fire and then smothering it - starving the flames of oxygen, infusing the pots with carbon, and turning the red clay into a deep black - similar to how the Black Pottery of Oaxaca is fired.
