An Artesian well occurs when the water in the aquifer supplying the well is under enough pressure to push it to the surface without the help of a pump. The aquifer is enclosed in an impermeable soil and the head of the well is lower than the water table, creating the needed pressure.

When drilling a well, one must located it far enough from septic systems so that contamination is not an issue. Property lines and rights of way for roads are also taken into consideration.

An artesian well (or flowing well) is a well in which the water level is actually higher than the land surface. It is named the former providence of Artois in France, where many wells of this type were dug during the 10th century.
