Your garbage disposal is tougher than your kitchen drain — but it's not a trash can. And the stuff people put down it is the #1 reason we get the "my sink is backing up" call. 🚰
🚫 NEVER put these down your disposal:

Grease, oil, or bacon fat (it hardens in the pipes and chokes the line)
Coffee grounds (they clump into a sludge that clogs everything)
Eggshells (the membrane wraps around the blades)
Fibrous stuff — celery, corn husks, onion skins, potato peels
Pasta, rice, or bread (they swell up with water and turn to paste)
Bones or fruit pits

✅ Keep it happy:

Run COLD water before, during, and a few seconds after
Feed it small amounts at a time, not a whole plate at once
Grind a few ice cubes now and then to knock buildup off the blades
A cut-up lemon keeps it smelling fresh 🍋

🛑 And the big one: if it ever jams, turn it OFF before you reach in there. Never stick your hand in a disposal — even when it's off. Use tongs.
If yours is humming but not spinning, leaking underneath, or just plain dead, that's a quick fix for us before it becomes a sink full of standing water.

This homeowner had a bathroom opening right off the hallway with no good way to close it off — a standard swing door would've eaten up the whole space and banged into everything.
So we built it out properly: framed a new wall, finished it, and hung a custom sliding barn door on a black rail. Now the bathroom closes off cleanly, nothing's in the way, and honestly? It looks better than what a regular door ever could.

Your AC is running fine… until one hot afternoon it just stops. Or worse — you find water pooling near your furnace or air handler. 💧
The culprit is usually something almost nobody thinks about: the condensate drain line.
Here's what's happening. As your AC cools your home, it pulls moisture out of the air. That water has to go somewhere, so it drains out through a small PVC line. Over time that line clogs up with algae, mildew, and gunk — and when it backs up, you get water damage, a musty smell, or a system that shuts itself off to protect against the overflow.
🚩 Signs your drain line is clogging:

Water pooling around your furnace or air handler
A musty, moldy smell when the AC runs
The AC suddenly shuts off and won't restart
A full overflow pan under the unit

✅ Quick DIY check: Find the line (a white PVC pipe near your indoor unit) and look for standing water in the drain pan. Many systems have a cleanout you can pour a cup of distilled vinegar into every couple of months to keep algae from forming.
🛠️ If it's already backed up — or you'd rather not go poking around your HVAC — that's a quick clear for us before it turns into a water-damage headache in the middle of a heat wave.

Western NY homeowners — when was the last time you thought about your sump pump?
Most people never think about it until their basement is flooded. Don't be that person.
Here's a quick checklist to make sure yours is ready to do its job:
✅ Pour water into the pit — the float should rise and the pump should kick on automatically. If it doesn't, you have a problem.
✅ Check the discharge line — make sure it's clear of debris and draining away from your foundation, not back toward it.
✅ Look at the inlet screen — it sits at the bottom of the pump and can get clogged with sediment. Clean it off.
✅ Check the age — most sump pumps last 7–10 years. If yours is older than that, it's living on borrowed time.
✅ Consider a battery backup — pumps are most needed during heavy storms. That's also when the power goes out.
Western NY gets serious rain and snowmelt. Your sump pump is one of the hardest working parts of your home — treat it that way.

Sometimes a home doesn't need a full gut renovation to feel completely different. This homeowner wanted a fresh, updated look — and the answer wasn't new floors or a kitchen remodel.
It was the details.
We're swapping out every basic interior door slab in this home for shaker style doors, and replacing all the standard casing and base molding with shaker style trim. Clean lines. Simple profile. Timeless look.
The floors are beautiful hardwood — But once the trim and doors are done, this space is going to feel like a completely different home. That's the power of finish work done right.

Did you know that most exterior wood trim only needs one thing to last decades longer — and it costs almost nothing?
Caulk the gaps.
Every spring, walk around your home and look at where your trim meets your siding, windows, and doors. If you see cracks, gaps, or places where the old caulk has pulled away — that's where water is getting in. Over time that leads to rot, mold, and eventually a repair that costs 10x what a tube of caulk would have.
✅ Use a paintable exterior caulk
✅ Clean and dry the surface first
✅ Smooth it with a wet finger for a clean line
✅ Let it cure before painting over it
