Lessons from Japan: Designing for Everyone

Most of the world doesn’t integrate accessibility into society as well as it should.

In Japan, the “luxury” was the graceful integration of accessibility throughout much of the city…setting a high bar for the rest of the world to achieve.

These Tenji Blocks are incorporated into flooring and hardscape in many public places in Japan, from sidewalks to train stations, museums, hotels, and more. As we continue to explore what luxury means in Japan, this one caught our eye for the attention to detail and graceful integration of accessibility for the sight impaired.

Designing for the needs of our clients is integral in our work with custom homes. Our homes are seamlessly tailored to the needs and lifestyles of each individual client.

Part 1: Attention to Detail

In Japan, we found extraordinary attention to detail everywhere we looked. Hotel rooms made every square foot feel intentional. Construction sites, sidewalks, and even utility covers reflected a level of care that's easy to overlook but impossible to ignore.

One of our favorite discoveries was a high-rise that transformed exposed glass standoff hardware into a playful detail, adding an unexpected sense of whimsy to an otherwise structural element.

It's a reminder that exceptional architecture is about elevating every detail.

We had the incredible opportunity to visit Japan these past three weeks. Rather than taking a typical vacation, we explored Japan through the lens of architecture.

From remarkable design details to the seamless integration of nature, every experience offered a new perspective on what luxury can look like.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing some of the architectural innovations that inspired us most and how they're influencing the way we think about designing luxurious homes.

Wellness is becoming one of the most meaningful investments homeowners can make. We recently visited the Snyder Diamond showroom in Pasadena and left inspired by the incredible ways wellness is being integrated into everyday living. Take a look at one of our favorites:

Wellness has become an integral expression of modern luxury. We are currently designing an elevated and wellness-focused space for one of our clients. It’s dedicated to restoration, rejuvenation, and intentional living. Their new home will encompass resort-like features including a sauna, whirlpool bath, and cold plunge.

By strategically raising the height of the site, the development maximizes sweeping ocean views, allowing each residence to fully embrace its extraordinary setting. Every home has been carefully tailored to create a seamless connection between architecture and the relaxed sophistication of Southern California living.
