Captain Closet broke a few design “rules” on this closet makeover.

She was blown away and is in love.

TLDR👇

Older home (pre 1945) that’s completely lovely in an amazing neighborhood. But the walk-in closets were not easy to work with.

She tried to design a solution online to diy and couldn’t figure out anything that would work.

She texted us…

Quick onsite design consult where she told us her needs

- max storage
- Room for a sentimental piece to hold her treasures
- Just enough room to hold her dresses (not worn often)
- easier entry
- small area for short hang (double rods)
- max storage
- shelves to the ceiling for shoes, folded clothes, and more
- a closet that didn’t kick her in the face everyday
- MAX STORAGE

And that’s what she got.

We actually just needed to figure out what she envisioned, because she was the true Captain of her Closet.

Captain Closet just helped her unlock all of that sweet closet potential by bending the rules and making her vision come to life.

Now her closet is her perfect space.

"Homeowner tip:

'I don't want that trashy PARTICLEBOARD installed for my closet... I want real wood!'

If you've said that or heard that before, it is a terrible take and not true at all.

And that's coming from someone who believed the same thing just 5 years ago.

So listen to me if you're a homeowner looking to improve their home in the next few years.

Today's "particleboard" is amazing, and the only way to go for almost every home improvement project. Especially for closets and storage solutions.

Unless you're as rich as Mark Zuckerberg.

Even then you're better off avoiding solid wood for most projects, but it's less of a flex, possibly. Have fun spending a ton of money for something that is inferior, though.

I have a lot of experience in the real world as a carpenter (framing, trim, finish, & cabinet installs), and while 5 years ago I would have scoffed at "PARTICLEBOARD" because I saw it as an inferior product, I was completely wrong.

Instead of ranting about this on a random Facebook post, I'll just make it short.

I've been in the closet/ storage industry for almost 2 years full time, and I guarantee you that today's particleboard, in 2025, is absolutely not the particleboard you're thinking of.

It. Is. Amazing.

The only way to go.

It's better described as engineered wood that lasts forever, never warps or changes it's look in a multitude of indoor climates, comes prefinished in a vast array of colors, is an incredible value, looks better for longer, and it has superior functionality to "REAL WOOD".

Hands down. Zero competition.

If you're a homeowner, learn to fall in love with professionally installed engineered wood, aka "particleboard".

It is NOT your grandma's particleboard, guaranteed."

Today we finished up this walk-in shoe closet in Williamsburg with a full-rotating mirror that can be stored out of sight when not in use. Really popular accessory. We’re even installing another one later this week.
