We were told these were picnic tables.

Which is true in the same way that the Biltmore is technically a house.

One of this summer's HXP construction camp crews built and painted these while they were here from Utah.

Somewhere along the way, a picnic table became a sea turtle mural. Another became a beach scene. Another became wildlife art. Apparently "picnic table" was treated less as a project description and more as a starting suggestion.

The tables will be donated soon, but before they head out, we thought the students deserved a little credit.

Not just for building picnic tables.

For looking at a stack of lumber and seeing something considerably more interesting.

We're still looking for volunteers to help supervise HXP students throughout the summer.

If you'd like to get involved, contact Theresa Carter at 252-223-2111 ext. 2 or [email protected].

The forecast this week appears to be:

Hot.

Followed by hot.

With a strong chance of hot later in the afternoon.

So while we're on the subject, if you're planning to pick up something large or heavy from the ReStore, please bring help.

Not because we're being dramatic.

Because furniture is rude enough already without adding 90-degree weather to the conversation.

We're a little short-staffed right now, and an extra set of hands makes a big difference for everybody involved.

Including Dennis, who has reached the point in the summer where ice pops are considered essential equipment.

ReStore Singles Profile #265

Name:

Mabel DeTable

About Me:

Single mom of four.
Yes, we’re a package deal.
The kids took a vote.
It wasn’t even close.

Age:

Young enough to still turn heads.
Old enough to have four kids, a wine rack, and a shelf for cookbooks.

Draw your own conclusions.

Green Flags:

• Accepts a coaster without making it weird.
• Presents me with fresh flowers for no reason.
• Knows that placemats featuring snowmen, elves, or red trucks hauling Christmas trees should not survive into pollen season.
• Understands that a bowl containing a dead battery, three receipts, a key, a paperclip, and one almond does not constitute a centerpiece.

Red Flags:

• Believes a stack of mail becomes décor if it sits long enough.
• Uses a chair as a closet.
• Has been known to describe a dining area as “extra storage.”
• Thinks trivets are a suggestion.

Looking For:

Someone who understands not every gathering needs a reason and knows the difference between eating dinner and having dinner.

Ideal First Date:

Dinner at home.
Everybody sits.
Nobody balances a plate on their knee like we’re waiting out a power outage.
Nobody says, “The table’s covered, just eat on the couch.”
If that sounds perfect, we might be a match.

Interested in Mabel?
Stop by the ReStore and meet the family.

Homeowner Orientation is Tomorrow.

If you've ever looked at Habitat homeownership and thought, "I wonder how that actually works," this is for you.

You don't need to show up with a folder full of paperwork and a five-year plan.

You just need questions.

Our Homeowners Orientation covers how the program works, what the requirements are, what the application process looks like, and what comes next.

No pressure. No obligation. Just information.

Ladies, it's time to make some noise. Preferably with power tools.

Think you can't build a house? That's exactly what a lot of first-time Women Build volunteers thought before they showed up and started swinging hammers.

No construction experience? Perfect.
Never touched a framing nailer? Even better.
Just looking for a fun way to support affordable housing and learn something new? You're our kind of person.

Join us for Women Build 2026 and help build a future home alongside an incredible group of volunteers. You'll learn new skills, make new friends, and leave with some pretty impressive stories for your next dinner conversation.

(And yes, we promise someone will show you which end of the hammer to use.)

Sign up today and claim your spot on the build site.

Sure.

And a seatbelt is just a strap.

The truth is that housing security has a way of showing up everywhere.

When families know where they'll be living next year, they're able to think about next year. Kids are less likely to change schools. Parents can spend less time worrying about housing and more time focusing on everything else life keeps throwing at them.

Research has linked stable homeownership to lower stress, better health outcomes, stronger financial stability, and better outcomes for children.

One Habitat survey of more than 400 Habitat families in Metro Denver found that children raised in Habitat homes were twice as likely to go to college.

A stable home doesn't just provide shelter.

It provides breathing room.

And sometimes that's the difference between getting through the month and being able to plan beyond it.

Turns out a home can affect a lot more than what happens inside its walls.

If you're curious about other Habitat myths we hear all the time, you'll find them in the blog linked in the top comment.

Every dad has a specialty.

Some can rebuild an engine.

Some can explain tax law.

Some can identify a problem from three rooms away based entirely on the sound it made.

Some can turn a ten-minute errand into a two-hour conversation with a complete stranger.

Most can look at a project and say, "Well, there's your problem."

Whether they are right remains a separate discussion.

But the older you get, the more you realize those specialties were never really the point.

The point was having someone who answered the question. Picked up the phone. Shared what they knew. Helped carry the heavy end when life got complicated.

Someone you could count on.

Happy Father's Day to the dads, grandfathers, stepdads, and father figures who have spent years showing up, helping out, making us laugh, keeping us grounded, and occasionally explaining why everyone else is loading the trailer wrong.

We appreciate you.

Some people learn trim and molding by watching YouTube at 1 a.m. with increasing confidence and decreasing accuracy.

We prefer a different approach.

We’re rolling out Women Build Construction Classes as part of this year’s fundraiser, hands-on workshops where you actually get to try the tools, ask the questions, and leave with skills you can use (not just a pile of “that’ll probably work” home improvement decisions).

Up next on the schedule:
🪚 Trim & Molding Installation – because gaps and guesswork are not a design style
🧱 Framing – yes, you’ll learn how walls go from “pile of lumber” to “actual structure”

More classes coming soon.

Huge thanks to our incredible instructors who are sharing their time, knowledge, and patience (especially when someone definitely measures twice and still cuts it short once).

Spots are limited, so don’t wait until the only thing you’re building is regret.

Sign up using the links in the comments or reach out to [email protected].

Come learn something new. Leave with sawdust on your clothes and confidence in your toolkit.

Most people don't walk into the ReStore looking for a mortgage.

But homeownership is the reason we're here.

If you've ever wondered whether Habitat homeownership might be an option for you, our next Homeowners Orientation is coming up on June 23.

Habitat homeownership is different from traditional homeownership. There are eligibility requirements, sweat equity hours, and an application process designed to help families build toward affordable homeownership.

The orientation covers how the program works, who may qualify, what the application process looks like, and what steps come next.

No pressure. No obligation. Just information.

And if you've ever called with questions about the program, there's a good chance you've already talked to Jowita. As our Homeowner Services Specialist, she helps people understand the process every day and will walk participants through the program step by step.
