This all started at a golf course in Maine.🏌️‍♀️
Our client was golfing and saw our sign at Sunday River, pulled over, snapped a photo, and reached out!

Her ask was simple, but she couldn’t quite get there on her own. She said, “I have this miserable sunroom that I think could be my favorite place, but I don’t want to stay in it.” As it was, she felt it was too big, too cluttered, and didn’t flow. The doors cut straight through the seating area, so nothing felt grounded or settled.

She is an empty nester but loves having her grown children, their families, and friends over, and she imagined the sunroom would be a great place to gather, with its views of the lake. She also wanted to sit out there herself with her morning coffee or evening cocktail, and to have a beautiful view from every seat.

We started with a rug. She had this incredible tapestry her daughter-in-law gave her from South Africa, and we built the room’s palette and vibe around it: warm browns, blue for the Maine water, plenty of warmth with textures and wood, but nothing that competed with what’s outside.

We chose a reclaimed coffee table, woven wicker with a nod to driftwood, and cordless reading lights so she can move them wherever she wants to curl up. We even scrapped a light fixture we’d planned: once we saw how much of the outside was coming in, the room didn’t need one. We kept the same wood ceiling she loved and arranged the furniture to flow beautifully, providing a view from every vantage point.

In the end, the room has indeed become her favorite spot in the house. Swipe through for the whole transformation 🤍

At Merrill Hill in Sunday River, Maine, the roads take their names from gemstones. For the Garnet House, that became the beginning of the design story.

The homeowners wanted a year-round retreat that felt connected to its setting, so we translated the richness of garnet, amethyst, and other mineral tones through color, texture, and material rather than literal motifs.

As cooking and gathering are central to how they live, the dining room needed to be more than a beautiful backdrop. Deep walls, warm wood, sculptural lighting, and a dark stone table create a setting for everyday meals, celebrations, and long evenings together, while holding its own against the mountain view.

A home inspired by Merrill Hill, designed for how the family lives and made to endure.

When we began designing this home for a family of six, one of the priorities was making sure its scale never came at the expense of connection.

The staircase sits at the center of the home, so it needed to do more than move people from one floor to another. It became an opportunity to create an architectural moment that also supported how the family lives together.

Open white-oak treads and a custom steel structure allow light and sightlines to travel between floors, while sculptural Bocci lighting brings warmth and movement through the full height of the stairwell.

One of our favorite decisions is tucked beneath it.

A soft, informal landing gives anyone in the family a place to lounge, read, play a game, or simply settle in while still feeling connected to everything happening around them. It creates a quieter place to land without feeling removed from family life.

This is what thoughtful residential design is about: not simply creating a beautiful architectural moment, but considering how a family will move through it, gather around it, and live within it every day.

For this mountain home, the client initially expected help with artwork, furniture, and décor. Instead, the work expanded into a much broader role across the home: collaborating closely with the contractor, weighing in on structural and functional details, and thinking through everything from room flow to drawer and outlet placement.

That technical involvement allowed us to advocate for the client while also bringing the build team practical solutions that supported the work on site.

It’s a good example of why we approach design as a whole-home discipline. The architecture, interiors, construction details, and everyday function are all connected, and the strongest results come when they’re considered together.

We consider how each surface will wear, what it will require to maintain, and whether it will become richer through everyday use. Natural wood, stone, metal, and woven textiles often bring warmth and character precisely because they are meant to age.

Where's your happy place?

This corner was designed for making, but its real purpose was connection.

Rather than tucking sewing and knitting into a closed craft room, we created a place within the flow of the home where family members could work side by side, talk, read, or simply keep one another company.

It has since become one of their favorite spaces.

Thoughtful design is not only about creating rooms where everyone gathers. Sometimes it is about making space for individual passions to remain part of family life.

A window seat can become one of the most-used places in a home.

Its scale, depth, lighting, upholstery, view, and relationship to the surrounding furniture all determine whether it truly feels inviting or simply looks good in a photograph.

That is the difference between adding a design feature and designing around how people will actually live.

A quiet place for coffee. Extra seating when the house is full. A place to read, rest, or simply take in the view.

Bringing the outside in is about more than framing the view.

Our client's request was for us to create a cozy yet elevated retreat where they could unwind after a day of skiing.

To do this, we brought in warm wood tones, layered textiles, and a natural palette to create an intentional connection to the landscape, making the bedroom feel restful, grounded, and closely tied to the mountains outside.
